Bring Youth Research Teams to the 2024 Annual Meeting

of the American Educational Research Association

Apply by November 16

The American Educational Research Association (AERA) is accepting proposals for the Youth Teams in Education Research (YTER) Program. This initiative offers a unique opportunity to encourage and enhance high school student engagement in education research. AERA’s Youth Teams in Education Research Program will bring teams of talented high school students to the 2024 AERA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia to present their work, develop their skills, network with peers, and foster their interest in the field.

YTER will be held April 11–13, during the 2024 AERA Annual Meeting. Participating high school students will:

  • Present their work in a high-profile featured poster session
  • Participate in a mini-workshop to discuss their ongoing research projects, consequential research issues, and potential opportunities for continuing to pursue research engagement
  • Meet with early career and senior scholars
  • Attend a select group of featured Annual Meeting sessions

The program is designed to inspire, shape, and expand the next generation of education researchers.

Up to 10 teams of high school students will be competitively selected to participate in the YTER Initiative. The program is designed for high school students who are currently working with one or more education researchers on the researcher’s study or are being advised by an education researcher.

Applications will be advanced by education researchers, who will provide an overview of their work with high school youth. High school teachers or those at other organizations who are guiding high school students in research are also eligible to apply.

Teams selected to participate will receive partial funding support to attend the 2024 AERA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. Eligible YTER proposals must include a minimum of four and a maximum of eight high school students.

Proposals are due November 16, 2023. Accepted teams will be notified by January 12. To learn more and apply, read the Call for Proposals.

If you have questions about the YTER Program, please email edresearch@aera.net.

AERA-NSF Grants Program

Proposal Deadline: November 20, 2023

The AERA-NSF Grants Program is currently accepting proposals for both its Dissertation and Research Grants. With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Program provides dissertation grants to graduate students and small research grants to doctoral level scholars using large-scale data sets in their research. The aim of the program is to advance fundamental knowledge of relevance to STEM education policy, foster significant science using education data, promote equity in STEM, and build research capacity in education and learning.

The AERA-NSF Grants Program emphasizes the advanced statistical analysis of data sets from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics, NSF, and other federal agencies. The program also supports studies using large-scale international data systems (e.g., PISA, PIRLS, or TIMMS) that benefit from U.S. federal government support. In addition, statewide longitudinal administrative data systems enhanced through federal grants are also eligible for consideration. Proposals are encouraged from a variety of disciplines, such as, but not limited to, education, sociology, economics, psychology, demography, statistics, and psychometrics.

REL Webinar: Improving Rural Teacher Retention

Based on my own background in rural education, if distance learning isn’t a part of this webinar I’m not sure what’s going on at IES.

REL Webinar: Improving Rural Teacher Retention

Join REL Northwest for a one-hour webinar on how rural district and school leaders can develop localized strategies to address teacher working conditions with the goal of improving teacher retention.

States, districts, and schools across the United States are struggling to retain teachers. High teacher turnover can have a negative impact on student achievement and result in high costs for districts when they need to recruit and train new teachers.

During the webinar, REL Northwest will share research on the influence of working conditions on teacher retention and detail a process—used with Lower Kuskokwim School District in Alaska—for using research and local data to identify steps and strategies to address and improve teacher working conditions. The process includes the following:

  • Reviewing research and local data
  • Conducting a root cause analysis
  • Developing a theory of action
  • Developing plans for implementing strategies and collecting indicator data
  • Conducting ongoing data collection to gauge how strategies are working

Who should attend: Rural district and school leaders and staff interested in improving working conditions to improve teacher retention.

Presenters:

  • Trudy Cherasaro, Director, Marzano Research, REL Northwest
  • David Yanoski, Researcher, Marzano Research, REL Northwest
  • Kimberly Hankins, Superintendent, Lower Kuskokwim School District (Alaska)
  • Dr. Jayne Downey, Associate Dean, Educator Preparation Director, Center for Research on Rural Education

The digital divide affects almost one-third of K-12 public school students in the United States. In response to distance learning, districts quickly worked to find ways to connect students without Internet access at home. But we can’t stop now – it is crucial that we continue supporting these efforts even as students return to in-person learning.

That’s why we are launching the 2021 Kajeet Digital Inclusion Grant. Through this program, we will partner with school districts, cities and towns, libraries, nonprofit organizations, and other community stakeholders in their vital efforts to provide learning opportunities to their students who need it most.

Grant winners will receive a pilot program with the Kajeet Digital Equity solution of their choice – WiFi hotspots, school bus WiFi, or building WiFi.

Applications are open now until June 4th. Learn more about the grant and apply at kajeet.net/digitalinclusion
