National Tutoring Awards 2024 Shortlist

An item that may be of interest to my colleagues in the United Kingdom.  If you look over the National Tutoring Awards 2024 Shortlist there are several that relate to K-12 distance and online learning.

Online Tutor

Arthur Moore

Arthur is a qualified Secondary teacher, with a Masters in Education from the University of Warwick, who has taught in a range of schools across the UK as well as in South East Asia. He is also an experienced examiner, and speaker at educational conferences, including The World Education Summit. He is also a keen educational podcaster and hosts the educational podcasts ‘Tutoring Tips’ and ‘TandTeaching’.

Away from tutoring Arthur is a keen ultra marathon running, podcaster listener and Radio 2 & 4 devotee. However, he loves nothing more than sunny mornings down the park with his young family.

Carina’s own journey from adversity to academic achievement serves as an inspiring example to her students, while her infectious enthusiasm creates a nurturing and empowering learning environment for all. Carina’s impact on her students is fuelled by her boundless creativity with her lessons demonstrating a fusion of imagination and innovation, blending elements from pop culture to current events, and she designs inventive competitions and games to make complex concepts accessible and engaging. Carina’s dedication extends far beyond traditional teaching boundaries as she leads her students to success in their CREST Awards, STEM@home sessions and her social media showcases.

Clare Ford

I am an experienced online tutor committed to fostering personal and academic growth. Over the past four years, I’ve delivered online tutoring sessions, notably supporting neurodiverse learners like Sophie, who saw significant academic improvement. My holistic approach prioritises professionalism, clear communication and collaboration, evident in long-term student engagement and parent commitment. Leveraging online tools and platforms, I create dynamic learning environments that encourage active participation and peer-to-peer interaction. Through initiatives like the Little Authors’ Big Ideas Creative Writing Quest, I inspire creativity and innovation, fostering a supportive learning community that transcends borders in an innovative global classroom.

Helen Osmond

Helen Osmond is nominated for Online Tutor of the Year for her transformative impact on students and dedication to professional excellence. She elevated a Grade 3 student to a Grade 5 in GCSE Maths, empowered an anxious student to resume studies confidently, and significantly improved assessments for a Year 8 student. Helen demonstrates exceptional professionalism and collaboration which includes speaking engagements at national conferences and creating collaborative networks like the Maths Hub. Helen enriches student learning and supports fellow tutors. Her commitment exemplifies excellence in tutoring.

Julia Crocker

Online tutoring offers immense benefits and outstanding results to Julia’s students. Most of her students prefer online sessions, finding them more intense and effective than traditional face-to-face learning. Julia uses Zoom and various interactive tools like online whiteboards and games to engage students. Diagnostic websites help pinpoint misconceptions, while platforms like Mathsbot provide essential manipulatives that bridge learning gaps. The flexibility of online sessions is a huge plus, especially for students with busy schedules or those in boarding schools. Witnessing students’ progress and improved confidence through online tutoring is incredibly rewarding!

Mandeep Singh Narwal

For Mandeep, tutoring is not just about teaching mathematics; it’s about unlocking potential & instilling confidence in his students. Online School of the Year

Afgan College for Girls

Mentor Education’s online school, Afghan College for Girls, has been providing online education to 1,500 Afghan girls over the past two years. With a considerable waiting list of 25,000 women and girls still eager to enroll, the college plays a crucial role for those under Taliban rule. In 2021 it was made illegal for girls of Secondary school age to go to school. In light of this Afghan College for Girls steps in, to ensure the continued access to knowledge and education for these girls aspiring to become doctors, scientists, businesswomen, and more. The school remains committed to instilling hope and empowerment by equipping the girls with the tools they need to succeed in their challenging environment.

Gaia Learning
