Asking the Wrong Questions – 4 lessons from new tutoring research

So this item scrolled through my inbox yesterday and I continue to both be shocked, but not surprised that even well informed folks in the field continue to ask the wrong questions.  Let’s take the issue of tutoring – and in particular – online tutoring as it is discussed below.

Take for instance this item in the key points:

  • The evidence for online video tutoring is inconsistent, but researchers see encouraging signs. Researchers still haven’t directly compared in-person to online tutoring.

In-person vs. online is simply the medium in which the tutoring is provided.  As folks in the field of educational technology should know, the medium impacts learning the same way a delivery truck impacts the nutritional value of the groceries it carries.  What would impact the effectiveness of the tutoring would be how the tutoring is designed, delivered, and supported – or put another way under what conditions is the tutoring provided.  So a comment like “the evidence for online video tutoring is inconsistent, but researchers see encouraging signs.” tells the informed reader two things: (1) absolutely nothing about the tutoring itself, other than the medium in which it was delivered (which doesn’t impact its effectiveness), and (2) those researchers that “see encouraging signs” also have little concept of the basic and fundamental principles of educational technology.

Similarly, when you look at this statement:

  • Researchers are seeing some initial positive results from combining tutoring with online computerized math practice. This lowers cost.

If I were to correct it, it would read like so:

  • Researchers are seeing some initial positive results from combining tutoring with additional math practice. If that math practice is offered through online computerized tutoring it lowers cost.

And this is underscores the problem.  What researchers have found is that tutoring with additional math practice is what is showing initial positive results.  The only impact that the fact that it is online computerized math practice is the reality that it is cheaper.  Now that can be an important finding – cheaper means you can afford more or it or that money saved can be used for other programming, but it does not impact student learning.

By Jill Barshay

I’ve been hearing about viral TikTok videos where seventh grade teachers complain that their students arrive with third grade skills. Research shows that kids are months behind where they used to be before the pandemic for their age and grade. This makes it really hard for children and teens to absorb grade-level content. They’re going to be learning less and less as they progress through school if they don’t catch up.

Tutoring is the best solution, according to researchers. But most of the evidence for using tutoring to combat pandemic learning losses was generated before the pandemic. A recent spate of studies and reports evaluates and describes the state of post-pandemic tutoring.

Here are four of my takeaways.

Key Points
  • Schools that have tried after-school tutoring are switching to tutoring during the school day in order to get more participation and better attendance.
  • Hiring outside vendors or organizations to find and train tutors takes away some burdens for schools, but tutor turnover can still be high. It’s difficult to coordinate what kids are learning from their tutors with what kids are learning in class.
  • The evidence for online video tutoring is inconsistent, but researchers see encouraging signs. Researchers still haven’t directly compared in-person to online tutoring.
  • Researchers are seeing some initial positive results from combining tutoring with online computerized math practice. This lowers cost.

What it is:

Sofia is designed to help math instructors who are struggling to find an effective math homework and assessment solution that is affordable for students (Sofia includes basic math through Calculus, plus Statistics content). Sofia includes the typical algorithmic homework problems you find in most of the publisher-based systems, however, it can be used with any textbook and is easily adapted to Open Educational Resources (OER) materials/texts. Sofia can align with your course design and organization by selecting and customizing pre-built assignments that complement teacher-selected OER and other teaching resources.

What we’re offering:

Michael, we are offering you a free trial of Sofia just in time for Summer Classes!

The Sofia homework system, combined with OpenStax systems, is a powerful teaching tool combo for our adult learners. We have used it in our math courses from the Developmental level to Statistics. It provides a platform that many students rave in their evaluations as one of the best things about the course. Numerous non-traditional college students experience math anxiety. And many of those students have stated that they doubt they would have succeeded or developed confidence in math skills without the aid of Sofia. The program has many learning tools such as providing multiple step-by-step examples, hints that promote critical learning, and numerous practice problems. As one student recently wrote in a course evaluation, with Sofia it is more than doing homework problems: “I am actually learning and obtaining the knowledge needed to do that.”

I want a free trial

We have a limited number of free trials for Summer 2022, so feel free to contact me to get started today!!

Have a great week,

All the best,

Todd
