Wellness Innovation Lab
Teachers, CDAs, school board representatives, and partners in mental health from across the province joined the PRT at LEARN on Friday, April 14th, 2023, to hear about and experience the Wellness Innovation Lab. This dynamic design thinking experience prioritizes the voice of youth (15-29), teachers, and community partners so that they can develop local strategies that address mental wellness needs in their schools and their own communities.
Participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive! They had the opportunity to listen to each other and share great ideas to improve school climate, discovered creative ways to get youth to open up through different games and SEL techniques, and are excited to host a Lab in many of their own schools!

CDAs – Effecting Change in their Communities!
You have heard about CLCs, but do you know what a Community Development Agent (CDA) does? Read this article by Daniela Scoppa and hear from three Community Development Agents who are effecting change in their communities. Simone Viger (LBPSB), Ed Sweeney (CQSB), and Michael Sitruk (RSB), share how they build and foster mutually beneficial partnerships that support community vitality and student success. As Simone says, “… a CLC school can add to a child’s sense of belonging,” and “When everyone brings their strengths to the table, unexpected benefits come from collaboration.”

ShiftED Podcast #19 in Conversation with Dwayne Matthews
At this year’s installation of the LCEEQ provincial conference, we enjoyed listening to Chief Innovation Evangelist and Future of Education Strategist Dwyane Matthews. His talk was so compelling and timely, where he asked a poignant yet simple question, “Are we preparing students for 2019 or 2030? ” Many recent points of inflection have been propelling these questions, be it; the pandemic, new reaches with A.I., and our quickly changing job market, climate change is forcing us to ask this question more and more. Do our students in our classes today have the capacity to adapt to a vastly unknown future? Do our students have the skills to navigate a fluidly changing landscape? In this podcast, we explore these ideas; it’s fascinating, to say the least! Enjoy.

Making the Case for Youth Mental Health and Art Education
Research shows what Teaching Artists understand through experience: Art Education is key to improving Youth Mental Health. According to researcher and artist Catherine Heinemeyer, creative subjects in schools promote “…dialogue, self-expression, playfulness, exploration, development of personal initiative, and just plain chatting, between young people and caring adults”, enabling “young people to understand the world around them and thrive despite adversity” (The Conversation).
