Digital Storytelling

On April 1st, 2021, LEARN hosted a Film Festival featuring Digital Stories created by students participating in the “tell a story” option of the I Belong project. The digital stories were created using a 6-week process that allowed students to explore their identity and sense of belonging to Quebec. The film festival was hosted by Jessie Currell, founder of Hands-on Media Education. It was a wonderful celebration of the efforts of students and teachers from across Quebec to talk about their identity and places they feel a sense of belonging to.

Promoting Bilingualism: Educational Resources & Relational Strategies

Youth attending English-language schools are more linguistically diverse than ever before. With many hailing from families with a French- and English-speaking parent, narratives surrounding what it means to be an English speaker in Quebec are changing.

In 2018, a team of researchers from Université de Montréal received funding from the Direction du soutien au réseau éducatif anglophone (DSREA) to learn more about identify positioning among students enrolled in English school boards for three regions of Quebec: the Gaspé-Îles-de-la-Madeleine, l’Outaouais, and l’Estrie. The study’s focus on the regions was intended to complement other research findings developed in urban areas.

School-Community Partnerships: A Lifeline in Challenging Times

On the LEARN blog, we hear from the Director of LEARN’s Provincial Resource Team, Debbie Horrocks, who reminds us how in the early days of the pandemic Quebec’s community schools/Community Learning Centres helped their local families by leveraging partnerships.

For more than 15 years, schools participating in Quebec’s community schools (Community Learning Centres network) have been building social capital and developing strategic partnerships in communities across the province. The community school model places an emphasis on bringing together families, educators and community partners to strengthen academic and developmental outcomes of youth. This ultimately contributes to improved school climates, student engagement and equity in Quebec by facilitating access to services and resources in English both at school and at home.

How Schools Can Support Families for a Successful Transition to School

Springtime heralds the beginning of the transition to school for our youngest students. While K4/K5 registration is underway across Quebec, families and schools are looking towards preparing for this next step with the little ones.

As part of this process, school and community organizations are encouraged to work together to provide a more seamless transition from home to school. The QEP’s new Preschool Education Program highlights the importance of partnerships “that can be established with community resources that work together (e.g. during transition activities) and ensure that they address the needs of children and families,”. (MEQ, 2021).

TEACHER APPRECIATION

Grateful for our Online Teachers!

Here are some heartfelt messages from online students to their teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week:

I thought chemistry was going to be really hard but turns out, it’s my favorite subject now. Thank you for always understanding and never making fun of our silly questions. 2020 has been a hard year for most of us and you understand that.

Thank you for all of the effort you put into teaching us, and always pushing us to reach our full potential. Your passion for the subject is evident in the way you teach us. Although the class can be difficult, you make me look forward to learning physics!

I just wanted to say thank you for being such a great teacher! Thank you for making us all feel welcome, making sure you’ve said good morning to everybody and asking how we’re doing! It really means a lot!

Thank you so much for always being there to help and answer our questions without judgment; math class is always such a fun place! Math can be really hard, but somehow you make it so simple and easy to understand (and I still haven’t figured out how so I’ll just go with magic for now 😉).

I was honestly nervous to start classes but it’s actually been fun. Thank you for being an awesome and understanding teacher! I love coming to class mainly because I look forward to what you have to teach and say.

I’ve always found it very enjoyable when a teacher is really passionate about the subject they’re teaching and very encouraging and understanding to their students, so thank you for inspiring us to want to learn, to try our best, and engage in deeper levels of conversation.
