Welcome back to the new school year. I hope you and your whānau are keeping safe and dry!
We have everything you need to know about getting ready for online learning in 2023 : our prospectus, registration process and timeline, tips for student support and online information sessions. Information sessions begin next week, registrations close on the 13th February. These dates are important for coordinating our mixed school classes. If you are wanting to participate in VLN activities ‘one on one’, we have a lot more flexibility in our timetabling.
We have had many queries about continued funding for Gifted Learners and our U1-3 schools. We are waiting to engage with the MoE regarding U1-3 funding and to hear from them on the continuation of Gifted Funding. If funding your school’s VLN participation is problematic please discuss with your regional MoE.
A reminder that we are a MoE provider for tutoring for ākonga who have lost learning due to COVID-19 disruption. We are underway with our first schools. Get in touch to find out more about how we can work with your school, or if you are interested in being a tutor with us.
Congratulations to our students who received Special Awards in 2022. These are a snapshot of learning across VLN classes and recognise not only achievement and improvement in learning but how our tamariki have participated by encouraging others, being positive, doing their best and contributing through their learning – Ka Rawe!
Korean and Filipino classes are being promoted this month. Both classes are provided at no cost (VLN Primary membership still applies). Thanks to the Korean Education Centre for supporting our Korean programmes. Filipino is taught tuakana/teina by senior students at Rosmini College. Thanks to Geoff Wood for leading this initiative.
Our lead team had the opportunity to connect face to face at the end of last year through a Kōtuitui hui event in Auckland. A reminder that Kōtuitui networks of expertise provides professional learning and support for online teaching and learning.
We farewelled our beloved Koka Jules, recognising more than a decade of teaching Te reo Māori and kapa haka online and previous to this a life time teaching in the Gisborne district. We will miss Koka and wish her and Colin well in their retirement.
We are seeking kaiako Māori and/or kaiarahi i te reo to work with us this year. If you know someone that fits the bill, please point them in our direction. If you have someone in your school who would like to teach with us, you can contribute their time in reciprocity for student participation.
We are very excited about the year ahead and the opportunities it brings our schools and learners. There are big changes on the way with the work we are doing with our secondary VLN colleagues; and we are hopeful that our partnership with the Ministry of Education will ensure sustainability and equity of access to the VLN for schools. Please share this pānui with schools in your network. Join in our information sessions if you want to know more or email with any questions primary@vln.school.nz
