REL Webinar: Defining and Measuring Progress

Join REL West for a free, 60-minute webinar on how to link data and measurement to logic model components in order to ensure alignment between activities, outputs, and measures. Presenters will share a process for how to do this as well as an example of how an organization used the process in their work. As a result of this webinar, participants will have a greater understanding of the purpose of logic models and how they can be used to define and measure progress.

Who should attend: State education agencies, local education agencies, and community-based and nonprofit organizations who want to use logic models to ensure work leads to specific outcomes.

Presenters:

  • Dr. Lenay Dunn, Deputy Director, REL West
  • Dr. Tran Keys, Senior Research Associate, REL West
  • Jennifer Brown, Director, Northern Arizona Council of Governments Head Start

REL Tool: Supporting Integrated English Learner Student Instruction – A Guide to Assess Professional Learning Needs

I wonder how useful this tool would be for a K-12 online or blended learning program.

REL Tool: Supporting Integrated English Learner Student Instruction – A Guide to Assess Professional Learning Needs

REL West and the Region 15 Comprehensive Center have developed a guide to assess teacher professional learning needs related to implementing research-based recommendations for the instruction of elementary-grade English learner students.

At the center of this guide are two tools—the Teacher Self-Reflection Tool and the Classroom Observation Tool—that are used to collect information about teacher practice and needs related to the recommendations from the What Works Clearinghouse Practice Guide Teaching Academic Content and Literacy to English Learners in Elementary and Middle School. The guide includes a 10-step process for using the information it generates, as well as step-by-step guidance, data templates and discussion protocols, and district scenarios. It was developed with input and feedback from the Arizona Department of Education and English learner coordinators from districts across the state. It was also piloted by several districts in Arizona to ensure its clarity and usability.

REL Webinar: Creating Culturally Affirming Spaces—A Systems Orientation

The second of three items from the folks at IES.  This webinar may be of interest to some readers.

 Institute of Education Sciences

REL Webinar: Creating Culturally Affirming Spaces—A Systems Orientation

Join REL West for the second webinar in a two-part series designed to expand on how culturally responsive strategies can be used to support academic and social and emotional development and to present systemic leadership approaches and strategies for implementing culturally affirming environments.

Researchers and practitioners will describe four evidence-based systemic leadership strategies for implementing culturally affirming environments: critically self-reflecting on leadership behaviors, developing culturally responsive teachers, promoting culturally responsive/inclusive school environments, and engaging a diversity of students and parents.

In this webinar, district and site leaders will—

  • Deepen understanding of culturally affirming school and classroom cultures and climates and how they shape student and staff outcomes
  • Explore systemic approaches for embedding culturally affirming spaces and practices at the school and district level
  • Learn about promising leadership practices and adult behaviors that foster culturally affirmative schooling experiences from practitioners in the field

This webinar is intended for district and site leaders who are the drivers and stewards of equity-centered efforts in their district. Participants are encouraged to attend in teams of two or more, if possible.

REL Webinar: Creating Culturally Affirming Spaces

The fifth of five items from the folks at IES – I’d be interested to hear from K-12 distance and online folks that have been doing work in this area.

 Institute of Education Sciences

REL Webinar: Creating Culturally Affirming Spaces

Join REL West for part one of a two-part webinar series designed to expand knowledge and provide practical, evidence-based examples of systems, policies, and practices that are culturally affirming—what they are and what they are not—to inform instruction, school climate-related practices, and everyday decisions that shape the academic and social-emotional well-being of students and their families.

A presentation and panelist discussion will include lessons from research and practice about how in culturally affirming spaces, small practices have big payoffs and hold significant value for students’ academic progress. These practices include pronouncing students’ names correctly, speaking positively about families and communities in front of students, and sharing one’s own intercultural experiences.

In this first webinar, participants will—

  • Deepen understanding of culturally affirming school and classroom cultures and climates and how they shape student learning and social and emotional well-being
  • Examine practices, policies, and conditions that hinder student belonging and inhibit the academic and social well-being of culturally, racially, and linguistically diverse students
  • Learn about promising practices and behaviors that foster culturally affirming schooling experiences for students, families, and staff

This webinar is intended for district and site leaders who are the drivers and stewards of equity-centered efforts in their district. Participants are encouraged to attend in teams of two or more and to register for both webinars, if possible.
