preparing students of today to be innovators, leaders, and engaged citizens of tomorrow
a note from julie
Can you remember what you were doing in October 2003? Though it was 20 years ago, the activities of that month are still very clear to me. In October 2003, Project Tomorrow launched the initial Speak Up surveys nationwide, providing a first-time ever opportunity for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade to share their authentic feedback and aspirations for the use of technology within learning.
Over 200,000 students were given that opportunity through their schools and districts, and the data findings informed the development of the U.S. National Ed Tech Plan in 2004. Fast forward to today, the Speak Up Research Project is now in its 20th year, and the data findings include the voices of over 6.2 million students, parents, teachers, principals, and district administrators nationwide. And you have been part of that amazing journey with us!
On October 26, we will be celebrating this momentous anniversary in Washington, DC, and also recognizing 10 school districts for their commitment to listening to the voices of their stakeholders. Look for our special announcement regarding those awards on October 26. In the meantime, give yourself a round of applause for your part in the Speak Up journey! You have inspired our work with your innovation and commitment to your students, staff, schools, and communities. Keep up the good work!
The celebration doesn’t end there – we invite you to share your Speak Up Story. Your experiences, triumphs, and vision for education’s future matter. Thank you for contributing to our legacy. Let’s continue this incredible journey together.

AASA, The School Superintendents Association, is receiving the Special Partnership Recognition Award for their long-standing support of Speak Up. AASA’s outreach on behalf of Speak Up has played a crucial role in increasing district leadership participation and raising awareness about the importance of stakeholder voice. The organization and its current leadership will be recognized at the 20 Years of Speak Up Celebration on October 26th.
