A newsletter from the Association of Educational Communications and Technology. Note that both the Distance Learning Division and the Teacher Education Division have been quite friendly to K-12 distance, online, and/or blended learning sessions at past conferences.
Note in particular the lesson plan design competition below – which hopefully will be of interest to K-12 teachers who read this space.

The AECT Foundation Lottery for International Convention Attendees
The AECT International Division writes to remind our members about assistance that the AECT Foundation is providing for international members who reside and work or study in a low-income nation. The reimbursement amount will be $200. Please read the below information and, if qualified, submit an entry.
Although the Foundation’s general account is modest, its Board has decided to answer the call for financial assistance. Being a student or faculty member/employee at a college/university in a qualifying nation is required. In addition, students must register for the convention using the student discounted rate.
To determine eligibility, please view the International Monetary Fund’s website at https://www.imf.org/external/datamapper/NGDPDPC@WEO/OEMDC/ADVEC/WEOWORLD for information on specific countries. If you meet the aforementioned citizenship/work or study criteria and the GDP per capita index for your nation is 15 thousand dollars or less, you may enter the lottery. Please send an email to AECT Foundation Treasurer Robert Doyle at rgdoyle12@gmail.com and briefly describe how you meet the criteria. Your email message must include your name, position, institution/employer, and physical address.
Your entry must be received by 23:59 US Eastern Daylight Time, September 30, 2023. You are encouraged, however, to submit an entry as early as possible.
The Foundation’s resources are not sufficient to support all eligible members. The Foundation, therefore, decided to utilize a lottery selection system. Grantees will be selected randomly.
Each grantee will receive the $200 reimbursement upon confirmation of attendance at the convention.

Journal of Applied Instructional Design (JAID) Special Issue: Designing Extended Reality (XR) Environments and Experiences for Authentic Learning
Special Issue Editors: Victoria L. Lowell, Purdue University, vllowell@purdue.edu and Paula MacDowell, Ph.D. University of Saskatchewan, paula.macdowell@usask.ca
Special Issue Description: For this special issue, we are interested in presenting current research in applied instructional design methods for utilizing VR, AR, MR, and other immersive technologies to foster authentic learning experiences. We are inviting articles that will provide readers with practical ideas, strategies, methods, and techniques on topics related to designing, implementing, and evaluating instruction using XR for authentic learning experiences. Furthermore, we seek contributions that provide evidence about the efficacy of XR technologies, including the challenges encountered during their application in authentic settings. The articles should inform the study and practice of immersive learning in preschool, K-12, higher education, or work-based contexts. We invite scholar-practitioner perspectives to disseminate and develop new ideas in instructional design. We aim to share expertise, success stories, and lessons learned from failure.
Article Proposals Due: October 15, 2023 More information can be found at this Google Drive File

New Awards Valued Over $800 – PK-12 Lesson Design Competition, Featuring the Cricut Maker 3
The Teacher Education Division is excited to announce a new competition at AECT this year featuring a makerspace essential cutting machine – the Cricut Maker 3!
Purpose:
This competition recognizes educators who design original, hands-on, curricular materials with the identified tool(s) to amplify or transform learning in a PK-12 (or equivalent) setting.

From Sunday, October 15, through Tuesday, October 17 (including the TED Game Night on Tuesday Night from 7:30pm to 9:00 pm ET), TED representatives will be hosting a competition using the Cricut Maker 3 to create curricular materials and resources. Conference attendees will be able to get hands-on experience using the Cricut Maker 3 to create models, manipulatives, games, or whatever other resources they can think of to use for instructional purposes. During the conference, participants can submit a lesson including a prototype of their Cricut-created resources for a chance to WIN ONE OF TWO CRICUT MAKER 3 CUTTING MACHINES – a $400+ value!
TED will give away BOTH Cricut Maker 3 machines used for the contest to the two lesson submissions that best integrate use of the machine into a PK-12 lesson. Additionally, the prototypes and lessons of the two winning submissions will be published in the online and open-access Journal of Technology-Integrated Lessons and Teaching with a Creative-Commons license.
Submissions will include the subject of the lesson, the topic and learning objective, grade level (or equivalent), duration of the lesson/activity, what the learners will do, how the technology tool will be used to amplify or transform student learning, a list of materials that identifies ALL materials needed for implementation, and enough details that others can generally implement the activity.
Submissions will be made using a form provided during the conference. Additional details are online on the Teacher Education Divison’s page in Higher Logic.
