A a principal theme in this issue of the Journal of Online Learning Research is Experience. Each of the articles focuses on how a group reports on and thinks about experience. For those who participated in the studies that lead to these articles, experiences seemed to be important; and the participants seemed to do their own framing of what makes a so-called good one. For the most part, each of these articles reports on good experiences learning online, but of course, there is always room for improvement. What is critical from a decision making perspective is that online education could be an important educational option for many young people in K-12 settings…

The purpose of this article is to examine ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the adoption and perception of virtual programs in Indiana public school districts. This mixed-methods sequential explanatory study focuses on beliefs held by Indiana public school superintendents and virtual program administrators regarding the growth of virtual education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Subjects received surveys regarding their views surrounding virtual education. Subjects who volunteered participated in semi-structured interviews conducted in web-based meetings. This study provides a snapshot of the state of virtual education in Indiana, including the perceptions held by school administrators at the end of the 2020-21 school year…

Despite increased interest in synchronous remote K-12 education, there is limited research on how students perceive such education. This article explores student perceptions of remote education, tutor support, social presence, learning and satisfaction. A survey that practitioners could also use as a formative assessment tool was distributed. The findings showed that students were slightly positive toward synchronous remote education. Positive perceptions of tutors and to some extent, being enrolled in a smaller class correlated with student perceptions of social presence, learning and satisfaction. Some students appreciated the flexibility and quality of remote education, although many experienced technical and communication challenges…
