Nationally Recognized Highlander Institute Announces New Name

Highlander Institute is retiring its name and launching a new era as Throughline Learning.

For 18 years, Throughline Learning operated in partnership with Highlander Charter School. As the team begins a new journey as an independent organization, they selected a new name that embodied the complex and comprehensive nature of their school improvement work.

“Testing outcomes may improve if you continuously drill students on hours of rote math and ELA content,” says Throughline Learning Executive Director, Shawn Rubin, “but if you really want students to thrive, then make them feel valued, make learning meaningful, and inspire them to reach heights that they never imagined they could.”

Over the past fifteen years, the organization has created a movement around improving student learning experiences. They created the statewide Fuse fellowship network of over 100 talented RI educators to spread new instructional approaches — replicating the model in Massachusetts, New York, and California; hosted an annual national conference drawing over 1,000 educators to Providence to learn from and with students; authored a book to help leaders manage complex change (Pathways to Personalization, 2018); created an instructional framework to build student belonging, confidence, and persistence; and developed a validated survey to elevate student feedback in data conversations.

Black and Latino Male Scholar Fellowship

College Visions (CV) is launching a new 2-year Fellowship aimed at getting more Black and Latino males in the college access pipeline. We are selecting 10 students who are entering their junior year in high school for the pilot cohort. In Year 1, students will participate in monthly learning circles focused on examining the experiences of Black and Latino males in schools and society; college and career exploration; and community-building and wellness. They will also have bi-weekly one-on-one check-ins with their CV advisor. In Year 2, students will focus on applying to college.

Upon enrolling in college, students will have access to ongoing support to help them succeed and graduate. Participants will receive a $1,000 stipend for each year of the 2-year fellowship. Attached is a flyer with a link to a brief interest form for candidates to complete by August 18.

Apply Now: EdTech Peer Learning Cohort 2

The Learning Accelerator (TLA) is excited to continue its partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Educational Technology (MA DESE) and facilitate a second EdTech Peer Learning Cohort. The cohort will bring together 10-12 Massachusetts school systems to strengthen the use of technology to support overarching school system priorities — all with an explicit equity lens.

Participating teams will identify a focused problem of practice for the year, receive monthly one-on-one support from TLA and MA DESE, and engage in several all-cohort experiences to collaborate with others. Throughout the school year, TLA and MA DESE will share learnings from the cohort to help other school systems improve their equitable use of technology. Interested school leaders should fill out the interest form by August 18.
