AECT DEFINITIONS AND TERMINOLOGY COMMITTEE MESSAGE

Hello everyone! I hope your spring semesters are going well. As you may know, the AECT Definitions and Terminology Committee recently opened a survey asking for feedback from members of AECT on the Committee’s current work on revising the definition of “educational technology.” The survey caused a little confusion and, consequently, the Committee co-chairs Albert Ritzhaupt and Keith Heggart have asked that I communicate the following to you:   “The AECT (2021) Definitions and Terminology committee would like to acknowledge the hard work of the AECT (2017) Definitions and Terminology committee, which generated the following definition for the field of educational technology:   Educational technology is the study and ethical application of theory, research, and best practices to advance knowledge as well as mediate and improve learning and performance through the strategic design, management and implementation of learning and instructional processes and resources.   The AECT (2021) Definitions and Terminology committee used this definition in drafting the next definition of the field. Calling all AECT Members! Thank you for your service to AECT. Whether you are a current or former division/AECT board member or committee member, we recognize your commitment and contributions to the foundation and operations of the organization. As we work to bring new systems, like Higher Logic, on board, we also need to enhance our documentation of activities and accomplishments. We invite you to complete this short survey by Friday, 3/31 if you are currently or have previously served on an AECT committee or taskforce.

CALL FOR AECT NOMINATIONS FOR PRESIDENT-ELECT

Current members of AECT are invited to submit a nomination to the Nominations Committee for the office of President-Elect to stand for election in January 2024. The President-Elect will begin their term at the 2024 Convention. This is a three-year commitment with differing responsibilities each year: one year as President-Elect (2024-2025), one year as President (2025-2026), and one year as Immediate Past President (2026-2027). SPECIAL ISSUE OF TECHTRENDS – VALUING DIVERSE LEARNING ECOLOGIES AND CLIMATES

The Culture, Learning, and Technology Division is curating a special issue of Tech Trends about valuing diverse learning ecologies and climates through using a strength-based lens with learning science. We are open to proposals from across the globe. Proposal Deadline is March 27, 2023. 2023 AECT SUMMER RESERACH SYMPOSIUM: NOW ACCEPTING PROPOSALS

DIVISION OF DISTANCE LEARNING 2023 CALL FOR AWARD NOMINATIONS

The AECT Division of Distance Learning opens the 2023 Call for Award Nominations sponsored by the division for the following awards: DDL AECT Crystal Award DDL Distance Education Best Practices Award DDL Distance Education Book Award DDL Distance Education Book Chapter Award (New!) DDL Journal Article Award DDL Graduate Student Research Award (New!) DDL Outstanding DDL-sponsored AECT Conference Proposal Award More information about each of the awards, including evaluation criteria, and how to submit nominations, can be found on our website. Please consider nominating a colleague, a student, or yourself for one or more of the DDL awards. It is a great opportunity to be recognized for your work and your contribution to the field. Nominations and accompanying materials must be received by Sunday April 30, 2023. Winners will be recognized at the DDL Membership Meeting during AECT International Convention to be held in Orlando, Florida on October 16-20, 2023.

IJDL LATEST ISSUE WITH A SPECIAL SECTION ON DESIGN FAILURE (VOLUME 14, ISSUE 1)

The International Journal of Designs for Learning (IJDL) is pleased to announce that its latest issue, with a Special Section on Design Failure (Volume 14, Issue 1), has been published!   Co-edited by Dr. Ahmed Lachheb (University of Michigan) and Dr. Nikisha Watson (ConnectWise), the Special Section on Design Failure in Learning Design Practice includes seven design cases in diverse contexts; six of them highlight diverse stories of failed learning design projects, and one design case highlights the use of failure-based learning strategies/techniques to engage learners in productive failure (i.e., learning with/through failure).

SPECIAL ISSUE OF THE  JOURNAL OF APPLIED INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN (JAID)
