This year’s Educator Preparation Laboratory (EdPrepLab) Fall Forum, Leading for Learning: Putting the Science of Learning and Development in Action, will explore the importance of collaboration between educator preparation programs and school districts to develop educational leaders who can fully support students to learn and thrive.
Advances in neuroscience and the developmental and learning sciences confirm that children need physical, social, and emotional safety; strong and trusting relationships; and safe spaces to take intellectual risks. Creating these conditions requires rethinking how we organize schools and prepare educators to serve all students. Well-prepared educators, who can create empowering and effective learning environments based on the science of learning and development (SoLD), are critical to creating the conditions students need to learn. Close collaboration between educator preparation programs and school districts is essential to this work.Educational leaders have the transformational power to bring SoLD-aligned practices to schools and to shape children’s learning for the 21st century. The Fall Forum will feature pre-k–12 district and school leaders and representatives from leader preparation programs that partner with these districts. They will focus on the importance of embedding SoLD into the design of pre-k–12 learning spaces and how to best prepare leaders for this work.
Following the Fall Forum at 3 p.m. ET, the Whole Child Policy: Putting the Science of Learning and Development Into Practice webinar will also explore the importance of creating learning environments grounded in SoLD that advance whole child practices and support student success. Linda Darling-Hammond, Laura Hernández, and Carolyne V. Quintana are featured speakers at both webinars. See the announcement below for more information.Opening Presentation

Transforming learning environments to support whole child approaches to education is essential to meeting the full scope of students’ social, emotional, and academic needs and for success in our global economy. Shifting education systems toward a whole child approach has far-reaching implications for our education system and requires practice and policy approaches informed by the science of learning and development (SoLD). This webinar series, Transforming State Education Policy Through a Whole Child Approach, explores the various elements of whole child policies featured in the Whole Child Policy Toolkit and shares insights from state and district policymakers who have engaged in efforts to shift toward whole child education.
In the first webinar of the series, experts will discuss what whole child design looks like and what it means for broader systems change. Local education leaders will provide lessons learned from their whole child design efforts and discuss how state policy can accelerate or impede these efforts.
Speakers:
- Linda Darling-Hammond, President, Learning Policy Institute
- Eric Gordon, Chief Executive Officer, Cleveland Metropolitan School District
- Laura Hernández, Senior Researcher, Learning Policy Institute
- Gerry House, Former President of the Institute for Student Achievement (moderator)
