This can be both stressful and exhilarating. Educators are feeling the pressure to rapidly demonstrate expertise in (or at least an understanding of) AI and either integrate this into their classes or detect and prevent nefarious use that impinges on Academic Integrity (the other AI). Also, there is the fear that robots are coming to take our jobs. And there’s more: James will also be presenting a concurrent session entitled “Flexing HyFlex: A holistic guide for successfully implementing HyFlex.” The Power of Prompting Presenter: Sandy Wagner About the presentation: AI-powered apps such as ChatGPT, Bard, DALL-E, and an ever-evolving array of new possibilities have gained ubiquitous usage in an educational context, producing results that surpass what was previously gleaned from search engines. Precise results, however, require crafting well-designed questions or commands that tell the AI what to do (McCoy, What is Prompt Engineering, 2023) and many times can become a trial-and-error process. This session provides an overview of Prompt Engineering, an important skill in creating prompts that guide Generative AI models to produce accurate and relevant results; thus, enhancing the ability to use generative AI effectively. About Sandy Wagner: An Associate Professor and Online Learning Academic Specialist for the Directorate of Continuing Education, Language Professionalization Programs at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, Monterey, CA, Dr. Wagner’s key achievements focus on technology integration, teacher training in foreign language education, and online language learning course design and development. Her career spans over 30 years as an ESL Instructor, French teacher, online course designer and facilitator, teacher trainer, and author for Oxford University Press and Pearson Education. She holds a B.A. in French and an MA.ED in e-Education and Instructional Design. Generative AI and Students Learning Experience: An Empirical Review Presenter: Samuel Tweneboah-Koduah, Ph.D. About the presentation: The popularity, acceptance, and use of Generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT) among students in higher education is increasing beyond everyone’s expectations. Whether ethical or unethical, regulated, or unregulated, ChatGPT has come to stay and like the previous technologies before it, there have been countless debates going on across almost all educational directories globally, on whether to adopt or not to adopt. Indeed, some countries have even banned its use among students in their educational communities completely. To accept or not, Generative AI has come to stay. This debate has necessitated the need to explore the impact of ChatGPT on students’ learning experience, as well as the dilemma it poses to both instructors and educational administrators as a whole. From the perspective of the theory of learning, the study applies a systematic literature review methodology to assess how Generative AI impacts students’ learning experience in higher education. This is done by evaluating the Generative AI’s key functionalities, opportunities, and challenges, and then presenting some empirical guidelines to explain how effective use of Generative AI can enhance the overall learners’ learning experience. The data coding and analysis were done using NVivo software. While Dr. Tweneboah-Koduah will be onsite presenting the findings, we would also like at acknowledge the co-authors of the review Marcus Kalivoda from Gannon University, Erie, PA, USA and Kwadwo Nyantakyi, Ph.D. of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration. Since 2019 she has been studying the implementation of telemedicine video visits in public libraries and has written the foundational research agenda aimed at studying this practice. Click here for details: usdla.org/2024-sponsorship Distance Learning Industry News: Stopping Out — It’s Not About Academics In a 2023 report by the National Student Clearinghouse, the “some college, no credential” population stood at 40.4 million in 2021, up 3.6 percent from a year earlier. Of this population, more than half (21 million, 52%) were 25 or older at their last enrollment. National Student Clearinghouse data show that the persistence rate has consistently tracked below 50% for the past five years. Adult learners also take longer to complete their programs, with the six-year completion rate (for any institution type) standing at 52%, compared to 62% for all students. Both these data points have underlying cost implications — stopping out before attaining a credential or taking longer to complete a program will make it harder for adult learners to advance in their careers even as they are shouldering the added costs related to that education. A recent CAEL study on how adult learners finance their education also explored the topic of stop-out patterns, among a group of adult learners having diverse backgrounds (35% were lower-income Pell Grant recipients, 71% were parents, and 41% were first-generation college students), races and ethnicities (14% Black, 8% Hispanic), and types of credentials they were pursuing or had recently completed (50% bachelor’s degrees, 28% associate degrees, and 22% short-term credentials). CAEL found the reasons for stopping out were far more likely to be related to health or personal issues, money, and time constraints than academic reasons. Notably, many adult learners viewed stopping out as taking a break rather than dropping out completely. Click here to download the report. In this session, Dr. Pam DeGuzman will provide a comprehensive overview of research to date on the implementation of telemedicine in public libraries. She will share commonly encountered barriers, and review models linked with successful outreach to patients. She will provide information about the recently developed Telemedicine in Libraries Pre-Implementation Workbook that guides librarians and community partners step-by-step to build the foundation for a successful program. About the presenter: Dr. Pamela DeGuzman is the Nurse Scientist at UVA Health and an Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of Virginia School of Nursing where she conducts research on innovative models to improve access to care for vulnerable populations. Her research is grounded in her experience as a bedside nurse, during which she observed firsthand the disparities those from rural areas experience when trying to access specialized care at large urban-centered healthcare systems. She has developed and evaluated CARING (Comprehensive Assistance: Rural Interventions, Nursing and Guidance), which is a nurse-led telemedicine-delivered intervention aimed at connecting rural cancer survivors with specialized oncology care. This experience led her to work toward improving access to telemedicine visits for patients who lack home-based broadband, through public libraries. Since 2019 she has been studying the implementation of telemedicine video visits in public libraries and has written the foundational research agenda aimed at studying this practice. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles in high-tier journals across medicine, public health, nursing, and library and information science.
