Mobile Learning On The Interwebs

Beginning with the ASCD Smart Brief.

How can teachers embrace the promise of mobile technology?
As more schools encourage the use of mobile devices from cellphones to iPad tablet computers in the classroom, some question the effect this trend will have on classroom instruction. Some see potential with mobile devices as a way to engage all students, but others say the outcome will depend on whether educators adapt pedagogy and practices to best integrate the technology into lessons. Australian researchers study use of iPads among autistic youth
Seven-year-old Australian student John Mavrothalassitis, who has autism and uses the Proloquo2go iPad tablet computer application to communicate, is less frustrated and has made improvements in his own speech since using the device, his mother says. Researchers in Australia have been prompted by a growing body of similarly promising anecdotal evidence to study the use of iPads for students with autism. “If they can get their emotions and anxieties regulated, they’re less likely to have behaviours that are of concern in the classroom,” said Debra Costley of Autism Spectrum Australia. The Sydney Morning Herald (Australia) (02 Apr.)
