Scholarship for Students in Online Classes -The Foundation for Blended and Online Learning has a scholarship program for high school seniors who have completed at least 5 blended or online courses during their last two years of school. See the details and apply on the Foundation’s homepage.
OCS Applied Science Near Capacity for Spring – Be sure to check ourCourse Capacity list for spring.
Registration System Updates – ELAs will soon see some updates in our registration system. When you enroll students into a course, you will see a popup of requirements, prerequisites, textbooks for AP, etc.
Spring Drop/Add Date Extended – Our drop/add date on our traditional calendar has been extended to February 14, 2019.
Districts with Late Spring Start – We sent a survey to district office elearning coordinators in the thirty hurricane-impacted LEAs. Please complete that survey for us so that we can accommodate your needs.
Early Start Classes End Dec. 14 – Our Early Start classes are quickly coming to a close. December 14 is the last day Early Start students will have access to their courses. Please see the latest progress report posted in our registration system to check on student progress. There’s still time for improvement!
Course Extensions – Instructional directors are now looking at extension requests for students in early start courses. We will begin reviewing extension requests for traditional calendar students on January 7, 2019. If large portions of the course are missing, an extension won’t help the student.  Extensions will only be granted for two weeks. Please review our Course Extension Reference Guide for details on extensions and the extension process.
Testing Reminder – Please remember that districts and charter schools must test all students enrolled in NCVPS courses that have an EOC, CTE, and North Carolina Final Exam (NCFEs). This includes OCS courses that are taught jointly between the LEA and NCVPS.
Please check your rosters to see if you have students enrolled in these courses with NCVPS. You do not need to report the scores back to NCVPS, but you will need it to determine the final grade for students in those courses.
End of Semester Tips and Reminders – Be sure to check our web page  End of Semester Tips and Reminders for the end of semester timeline, testing information, grade reporting, extension requests, and more.

Early Start Classes End Dec. 14 – Our Early Start classes are quickly coming to a close. December 14 is the last day Early Start students will have access to their courses. Please see the latest progress report posted in our registration system to check on student progress. There’s still time for improvement!
Course Extensions for Districts Impacted by the Hurricanes – If you are one of the thirty districts impacted by the fall hurricanes, we have sent a separate communication to your district E-learning Coordinator about course extensions. Your students are automatically opted in for the extensions, but you may opt out if not needed. If you did not receive that email, please contact Adam Renfro atadam.renfro@ncpublicschools.gov.
Regular Course Extensions – If you are in a district that was not impacted by the hurricanes (and do not have a modified pathway plan), you will follow the usual process for requesting courses extensions. Our instructional directors are now reviewing extension requests for Early Start students. We will begin reviewing extension requests for traditional calendar students on January 7, 2019. If large portions of the course are missing, an extension won’t help the student.  Extensions will only be granted for two weeks. Please review our Course Extension Reference Guide for details on extensions and the extension process.
If course extensions are only needed for one to two days for technology issues, illness, and similar reasons at the close of a semester, those requests should be arranged directly with the NCVPS teacher from the ELA.
Testing Reminder – Please remember that districts and charter schools must test all students enrolled in NCVPS courses that have an EOC, CTE, or North Carolina Final Exam. This includes OCS courses that are taught jointly between the LEA and NCVPS.
Please check your rosters to see if you have students enrolled in these courses with NCVPS. You do not need to report the scores back to NCVPS, but you will need it to determine the final grade for students in those courses.

NCVPS Teacher of the Year Finalists Announced
We would like to congratulate the following NCVPS teachers who have been named the Top 5 candidates in  the NCVPS 2018 – 2019 Teacher of the Year selection process. We know that many schools have developed a great relationship our teachers and that you would want to see this update.
Here are  the five  finalists:
  • Sarah Johnson – OCS English
  • Anna Gratale – OCS English
  • Jessica Polk – Math 1
  • Alexa Haselhorst – French 2
  • Shara Packman – Latin 1
These teachers will move to Phase 2 and out of this group will come this year’s winner.
We are very proud of the work all of our teachers are doing and wish these candidates the very best as they move forward.
Teacher of the Year Process
Our Teacher of the Year selection team has been busy calculating scores from Phase 1 submissions for this year’s nominees.
To remove bias and help maintain the integrity of the selection process, the first phase includes “blind scoring,” in which selection team members were provided with the responses only and individual teacher names were removed from the submissions.
Each year, our TOY candidate pool becomes more and more competitive, and we believe this is because NCVPS has a phenomenal group of teachers who go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure students are successful!

Weekly Updates
Course Improvements – Many people are not aware that our courses are in a continuous state of improvement. We have teams of instructional leaders, teachers, content creators, and Exceptional Children specialists, all from across the state, who help revise courses.
This year alone, we are revising Digital Photography 2, Principles of Business, French 3 and 4, Art 1, Personal Finance, AP Psychology, NC Math III, and Earth Science.
We have some new courses on the horizon, as well. Math III Co-teaching/Intervention is in development. DPI is retiring the Computer Programming course, so we are hard at work on the development of a new Python Programming course. We know North Carolina programming students will love it. We don’t have release dates yet for the new courses. Look for future announcements on that.
Last Days to Transfer – November 7 was the last day to transfer into Early Start Fall block classes, and November 21 is the last day to transfer into Traditional Fall block courses.
NCVPSTalks Session Nov. 20 – Register here for our next NCVPSTalks. The session, Social Media and Your District, is on Tuesday, November 20, at 1 pm.Your social media presence is branding your district whether you know it or not. You can manage your edubrand with a few best practices. We will include more details and the link to register next week.
NCVPS Teacher Tip: Save Your Work – A Good Backup Plan
NCVPS teachers have a lot of great tips to share with online students and the support crews who facilitate their learning. “They know a thing or two because they’ve seen a thing or two.”
Save Your Work – A Good Backup Plan
Saving your work is an important step in protecting hours of hard work and the effort you’ve made in your NCVPS course. You may not think you will need the work later, but this type of planning is a key trait of a successful online learner. Guarding and safely storing your data is also a key part of being a responsible internet user.
See all the details on our Save Your Work – A Good Backup Plan blog post.

2018-2019 Registration Process
Enroll students through the NCVPS registration system. If you need access, contact our Virtual Support Center.
If you are a new e-learning advisor and NCVPS point-of-contact for your school, please update your contact information in our registration system. Click on the “My Info” tab when you log in to update your information.
Please remember that there is only one login per school. If your school already has access, you will need to share the login username and password. If you are new to the NCVPS registration system or need a refresher, Quick Registration Guide or our Registration System User’s Guide.
Student Course Access
Students will have access to their courses at 7 a.m. on the first day of classes. Before classes begin, students can go through our Canvas Orientation. We also have Pre-Instruction Resources for each class. These resources help students get a better understanding of courses before classes begin.
