Exciting News: Legislative Advocacy Update

This may be of interest to my California readers.

LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY ALERT

This is Great News Michael!

Assembly Joint Resolution authored by Assemblymember and Speaker pro Tempore, Kevin Mullin, passed.

Legislative Update for CUE Members – September 22, 2017
Current Federal efforts to rescind or block regulations and funding that protect equity of technology access and support for schools and homes are of major concern, and CUE, an education nonprofit based in California, is doing something about it. CUE has been working towards promoting net neutrality and Internet access to underserved homes and schools and today announced the success of their efforts  Рwhich culminated in the passage of Assembly Joint Resolution 7 (AJR 7) by the California State Legislature. CUE initiated the resolution, which was authored by Assembly Member and Speaker pro-Tem, Kevin Mullin.

‚ÄúWe are thrilled that AJR 7 has passed. Its success underscores CUE‚Äôs focused advocacy efforts on preserving important programs and policies that¬†insure¬†equal access to the Internet and related technology,‚ÄĚ said John Cradler, CUE Legislative Consultant.

This means that it has been officially Resolved by the Assembly and the Senate of the State of California, jointly, that the Legislature strongly supports each of the positions of AJR 7 and views them as high priorities for California and the country, and opposes any federal efforts to rescind or block them further…

John Cradler, CUE Legislative and Policy Consultant, proposed a resolution to be potentially adopted by the California Legislature that will ask the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the US Congress, and the President, to support the already FCC-approved implementation of net neutrality, continue broadband-enhanced Lifeline, and sustain the established funding model for E-Rate.

This is the resolution that CUE supported in many ways to include, drafting the resolution, finding an author, advising the author’s staff, suggesting and editing amendments, communicating with the CUE Legislative Advocacy Committee, writing support letters, getting support from other associations and education agencies, informing other state and federal legislators about AJR 7 to include California Senator Jerry Hill, and Congresswoman Jackie Spear, and testifying before the Assembly and Senate.

To access AJR 7, which is now enrolled and chaptered as Resolution 151, click here.

The effort paid off as evidenced by Assemblymember Mullin commenting to me that if it had not been for the six people (all CUE members) who testified in support of AJR 7 at the Senate Utilities Committee, it might not have passed.
