Enjoy this update from the CUE Board!

Dear CUE Members,

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am excited to share this mid-year update with you on some of the great things that have been happening at CUE this year.

CUE Infrastructure and Data Systems Updates

Over the past decade, CUE’s back-end process had struggled under the weight of an antiquated (circa 2005) accounting system. Working together, the Board and staff seamlessly migrated operations into QuickBooks, putting CUE on a modern, stable, and much more powerful accounting platform. We’ve also engaged an accounting firm to provide support for the day-to-day financial operations of a non-profit organization. As a result, we’ve been able to quickly add new functionality, like CUE Gear Store credit card transactions and streamline internal processes, all while reducing operating overhead costs. Moving forward, the QuickBooks platform will provide real-time reporting and open up even more opportunities for new and improved Affiliate and customer service features that were not possible in the previous system. We are all very excited for this change.

As if that weren’t enough, staff has also made great progress in moving forward with migrating CUE to a modern, feature-rich association management system. CUE’s membership management system was a cobbled together collection of stand-alone systems dating back to the ‘90s. One of the Board’s priorities this year was to fix our back-end systems. Danny Silva, Director of Technology Integration, has been working collaboratively with NYSCATE and MACUL (the ISTE Affiliates in New York and Michigan) as all three of our organizations transition to Configio, a cloud-based, feature-rich association management system that, when fully implemented, will provide CUE the power and flexibility to offer improved services to members, Affiliates and customers. Danny has been working diligently on the project and I’m happy to say, the first event to go live in the new system is CUE BOLD. I know Board and staff are anxious to be fully migrated and as we get closer to full implementation, more information will be forthcoming.

Community Outreach and Communication

Hopefully you’ve noticed that we’re engaging more CUE members in communication and community engagement for CUE. The Board and staff strongly believe in growing the CUE community by growing the capacity of our members. Working together; Jon Corippo, Cate Tolnai, and Jason Seliskar have made tremendous strides in shifting the communication and outreach efforts into the community by engaging CUE members and educational thought leaders as Social Media Champions.

The team has also made great strides in improving the look and feel of CUE. With the updated Spring CUE web page, new CUE logos, improved layout and design of CUE member emails, and an upcoming new interface for the CUE Gear Store in Palm Springs, the CUE team is bringing a consistent and modern look to everything CUE. The team also tackled an update to the CUE Blog and consolidated communications into the OnCUE portal. We believe this is the start of even more great things to come and we look forward to more exciting collaborations in the future.

Affiliate, Member and Exhibitor Support

Another major operational directive of the Board this year was to provide membership value by supporting the Affiliates in their support of CUE members. In the short time Jason Seliskar has been on board, he has been actively doing Affiliate outreach and support, and I know he and Cate Tolnai have even bigger plans for Affiliate and member engagement in the future. Another project that Jason has been working on in the background involves CUE’s exhibtor relations. Along with Board Member Roger Wagner, Jason has been busy streamlining exhibitor services, developing new exhibitor engagement opportunities and growing relationships.

Events, Professional Learning & Partnerships

The CUE team has also been busy with our many events. Danielle Forst, Jessica Siasoco, and Kayla Jones marshaled the CUE team to run a successful Fall CUE in the face of uncertainty and losses due to the fires. Professional Learning continues to provide world-class professional development for schools with Black Label, Speaker’s Bureau, Rockstar Specialty and SuperCUE events throughout the year. We’re also very excited for CUE Rock Star Jam Sessions with new partners like California League of Schools, Association of California School Administrators (ACSA), the California Consortium for Social Studies and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

40 Years of CUE

The 40th celebration at Spring CUE in Palm Springs is right around the corner! Board Member Suzanne Mitchell has been working with CUE Pioneers and long-time members on gathering and documenting CUE’s 40 years of history which will be on display throughout the conference. The CUE team and Conference Planning Committee have also been busy with planning some exciting and fresh new innovative updates to the Spring Conference. The Board is looking forward to celebrating CUE’s 40 years of history and launching the next 40 years of CUE. We hope you can join us in Palm Springs.

Human Resources and Staffing Updates

In November, the Board re-established the CUE Personnel Committee, as defined in the bylaws, to provide governance and oversight on personnel issues including compensation, position control, and policy. At the committee’s first meeting, the committee approved an equitable retirement and benefits package for all CUE employees. The committee also directed staff to conduct a full review of current positions, job descriptions, and HR policy. The CUE Board and Staff also brought on board a professional HR firm to handle the day-to-day administration of benefits, payroll, and compliance, allowing staff to focus on executing CUE’s mission and vision.

Speaking of CUE staff, we’re excited to welcome our most recent team member, Merrie Lee John, who comes to us with over 15 years experience working in school districts, most recently as the Executive Assistant to the Superintendent at Yosemite Unified. As CUE’s Business Operations Manager, Merrie Lee has brought amazing insight into how to optimize internal CUE processes to better serve members and customers, many of whom are school districts. With the addition of Merrie Lee, we’ve significantly increased the ratio of staff with direct K-12 education experience.

Executive Director Search Update

And finally, on the Executive Director (ED) search front, the Board remains committed to an open and transparent process as we seek to find the next ED for CUE. At our January meeting, the Board received and reviewed the Executive Director Search Committee’s report which included a synthesis of responses from Affiliate leadership and past Board members on the quality and characteristics that we should be looking for in the next ED as well as the survey data from the July 2017 Leadership Development Institute regarding the future of CUE. The data and summaries provided helped frame our conversation for this important task. With that in mind, the Board considered the needs of the organization, staff, and members and weighed multiple options for how best to move forward. The Board is continuing our discussion and once we’ve solidified the next steps, additional updates will be forthcoming.

In summary, the CUE Board, Interim Executive Director Jon Corippo, and the CUE team have been very busy these past several months working to bring you a better, more consistent CUE experience and I am constantly amazed at what we’ve accomplished together in such a short period of time. On a personal note, it continues to be my privilege to serve with my eight fellow Board members as we continue to move CUE forward. Together with Jon and the CUE team, I’m looking forward to even more great things to come. Stay tuned.

Sincerely,

Andrew Schwab
