AECT STC Professional Development Webinar: “Translating Theory to Practice: Systems Thinking in Instructional Design,” Wednesday, April  24, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm EST.

ICEM 2019

The FedEx Institute of Technology and the University of Memphis are pleased to welcome the International Council for Educational Media to Memphis for the 2019 Conference – September 18-21 in Memphis, Tennessee. The 2019 theme is “Emerging Innovations in Educational Media.” The call for proposals deadline is April 30th. Additional information can be found here.

SICET EITT 2019 CONVENTION

EITT2019 will be held on October 27-31, 2019, in Biloxi, Mississippi. Call for proposal is due onMay 1st, 2019. Our accepted proposals will have the opportunity of publishing in IEEE Conference Proceeding s. All scholars and researchers around the world are invited to present at the convention to share your expertise and innovative practices with your peers, professional practitioners, and researchers from various disciplines. FLORIDA GULF COAST UNIVERSITY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR ITS NEW (ED.D.) DOCTORAL DEGREE CONCENTRATION IN LEARNING DESIGN & INNOVATION

Combining the exemplar processes associated with a research-based doctoral degree in instructional design and entrepreneurial thinking and a scholarly approach to an M.F.A. in art and design, successful candidates will, through a collaborative studio experience, first identify emerging issues and problems in learning, then identify and create solutions for those problems, and finally, through a unique educational, design-based dissertation process, validate those solutions. The program provides opportunities for candidates to earn their degrees in a face-to-face, hybrid/blended, and/or a fully online modality.  Coursework includes classes in critical and design thinking, design and development tools, and instructional program analysis, among others. For this special issue we are interested in presenting current research in distance education involving innovative methods to create, implement and research authentic learning experiences including experiential learning. Submissions should emphasize innovative practices and/or methods of authentic learning experiences via distance education. Articles are sought which will provide readers with practical and applicable ideas, strategies and techniques on topics related to authentic learning experiences. INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL FOR EDUCATIONAL MEDIA

The ICEM 2019 Conference will take place at the University of Memphis, September 18-21, 2019. ICEM is one of the oldest associations in the field, established by European Ministries of Education in 1950, with strong links to UNESCO. The Call for Proposals is now open, submission deadline is March 31, 2019 . This year, ICEM will launch their first graduate students mentoring program at the convention. The call for application will be announced later spring.

This study explored the network and discourse of a group of educators, all of whose roles inhibited their participation in professional communities at either the school or district level after they joined virtual professional communities (VPCs). The two VPCs in question included one for mentors who supported online learners, and one for early literacy coaches who worked with teachers to improve literacy instruction. Using network and textual data that was created by the participants as a result of interactions, the researcher conducted social network and text-mining analysis. The findings reveal that members exchanged high quality practical knowledge and ideas about professional identity. Areas in which the VPCs could be improved are also discussed.

This study came out of Jemma’s experience as a special needs teacher in South Korea, where she felt quite isolated in terms of a face-to-face network of subject area peers.  The actual study focused on two VPCs: one focused on an online mentor community and the other on an online coach community.

At the time of the study, the online mentor community had 242 members, but only 19 of those posted anything beyond an introduction.  Similarly, at the time of the study, the online coach community had 1,147 members, but only 78 of those posted anything beyond an introduction.  The data for the study was the online discussions, which were text mined for content (i.e., Word Clouds) and function (i.e., Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count – was the program used) words and a social network analysis (i.e., UCINET).

In terms of the content words…  I missed the notes for the online mentors.  However, the online coaches appreciated collaboration among the group, and appeared willing to share their knowledge and data.  They also appreciated bouncing ideas off of each other or getting feedback from each other.

In terms of function words…  The study samples were small in comparison to the Pennebaker et al. (2015) comparison samples.  The study samples did show a greater percentage of questions and assent words (e.g., okay, I agree, etc.) than the comparison samples.  Similarly, the study samples had many more emotional terms than the comparison samples, with some increase in the social terms in the study samples in relation to the comparison samples.

In terms of the social network analysis…  Power users tended to post longer posting outlining their thinking or describing their own contexts, frequent shorter postings to express agreement or appreciation, posting questions, encouraging people to share things, sharing resources themselves, and expressing positive feedback.  Power users were also connected to other peripheral nodes within the network.  Finally, power users often provided logistical management or support for network members.
