Teacher preparation programs may be failing to teach about the latest education technology, says Jenna Conan Simpson, director of instructional technology at All Saints’ Episcopal School in Texas. Conan Simpson, who will present findings from a qualitative study of educators at this week’s International Society for Technology in Education conference in New Orleans, says teachers reported using outdated technology and from teacher educators who were decades removed from being classroom teachers.

Schools should adopt a “new normal” to support students who are continuing to learn remotely, according to researchers Alvaro Brito, a doctoral student and learning specialist at the Compton school district in California, and Devery Rodgers, assistant professor of educational leadership at California State University-Long Beach. Their findings, presented at the International Society for Technology in Education conference, include giving teachers experience with online course design, using data, and focusing on communication.

Limited studies show some promising results from pandemic-era virtual tutoring programs, but Matthew Kraft, an associate professor of education at Brown University, says it is “premature to start saying: ‘Oh, it’s working here, it’s not working there.'”

A study of 5,000 adolescents in Japan suggests that those taking online classes that featured daily routines and social interactions during building closures because of the pandemic were better protected from mental health challenges when they returned to in-person classes. The study, which may be one of the first examining students’ mental health after the return to in-person schooling, was published in Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences Report.

Opinion: Idea-sharing boosts online engagement
Idea-sharing can help engage students learning in Massive Open Online Courses, according to Unnati Narang, an assistant professor of marketing at the Gies College of Business, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
