Structural Racism Explainer Collection

A new collection from the Urban Institute’s Racial Equity Analytics Lab synthesizes the impact of structural racism across various policy areas—including tools that school authorities can use to help racially integrate schools, despite the persistence of residential segregation.

Engaging Students in Hybrid & Remote Models

This resource from The Learning Accelerator is derived from conversations with teachers, collecting the strategies they are using to engage students in hybrid or remote learning environments.

Early Childhood Workforce Index 2020

This third edition of the Index from the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment continues to track state policies and conditions affecting the early care and education workforce, like workforce qualifications, work environments, and compensation. It includes policy recommendations and spotlights state responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Parabola Project

This project was developed through a collaboration with The Learning Accelerator and Ariadne Labs to provide tools, strategies, and resources for schools to implement safety measures that minimize health risks while maximizing students’ learning and wellness during COVID-19.

Linked Learning and Community Schools

This brief from Linked Learning Alliance and the UCLA Center for Community Schools describes a framework for bringing the community schools and the Linked Learning approaches together at the high school level so that all students, particularly those in communities that have been historically marginalized, are on a path to postsecondary success. Both models are community-based efforts providing in-school and out-of-school educational experiences that are meaningful and engaging, foster strong relationships with caring adults, and integrate support structures that address students’ academic, social-emotional, mental, and physical well-being.

National Governors Association and 6 States Launch Social Emotional Initiative

NGA announced it will collaborate with Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan, North Dakota, Oregon, and Wisconsin on strategies for equitably meeting the social-emotional needs of students and families during and beyond COVID-19. The initiative announcement comes as students and their families confront fear, anxiety, trauma, isolation, and stress during COVID-19, as well as growing public concern about economic instability and persistent racial inequities. Governors have increasingly emphasized and prioritized the importance of addressing the holistic needs of students as schools reopen.

New UCLA Research Effort Aims to Increase Diversity of Educators in California

UCLA’s Center for the Transformation of Schools announces a two-year study of educator diversity in California. The research aims to build on the expertise of students, scholars, and university leaders to close the gap between students of color and the educator workforce.

Redesigning College Admission and Financial Aid Through a Racial Equity Lens

The National Association for College Admission Counseling has created a commission to reimagine admissions through a racial equity lens that will release three reports by this summer: a guide for colleges centered on racial/ethnic inclusion, a related guide for postsecondary institutional leaders, and recommendations for federal and state policy makers for an equity-based college transition.

Upcoming Events

April 14: Webinar on Access to an Equitable Education in Los Angeles

12 p.m. – 1 p.m. PT

UCLA’s Center for the Transformation of Schools (CTS) and the Los Angeles County Office of Education present part two of their research into the accumulation of disadvantages experienced by Black youth in LA County. In this 1-hour webinar, the CTS research team will present key findings and recommendations from their report looking at 14 LA County school districts with 800 or more Black students.

April 20-June 1: Accelerating Learning Webinar Series

12 p.m. ET

The Accelerating Learning series features five webinars designed for school system leaders, their teams, and other education stakeholders to inform their work in supporting student learning in the pandemic and post-pandemic world. Co-produced by the Learning Policy Institute and The School Superintendents Association (AASA), the next webinar, on April 20, will focus on high-quality tutoring strategies.
