Teachers in some schools are continuing to teach online while their students convene in the classroom. The model, which often includes a proctor or substitute to assist in person, is being adopted in cases where teachers are immunocompromised, and Vivian Ekchian, superintendent of the Glendale Unified School District in California, said it could be an option for students without at-home internet or when parents are not available to assist with remote learning.

States pilot datacasting to support remote learning

Some states, including Indiana, Pennsylvania and South Carolina, are investing in data broadcasting — also known as datacasting — to bridge the digital divide among rural students. Three school districts in South Carolina are piloting the model, which sends information via television broadcast signals rather than cellular networks or internet service, to help support remote learning during the coronavirus pandemic.

Report: US lags in online learning capability

The US ranks 12th in digital infrastructure, according to an analysis of 30 countries by Preply — falling behind Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Luxmebourg and others. The analysis shows 72% of students in the US have access to a computer at home — compared with 91.7% in the UK.

Digital literacy skills among students and their parents were often lacking during remote learning in the spring, according to a survey of more than 700 teachers in 40 states by Bridgewater State University education professors. Heather Pacheco-Guffrey, an associate professor of science education, said data showed students and parents often have the skills to consume technology but not to create with it, such as using Google Docs to collaborate and joining Zoom calls.

Md. district adapts SEL for online students

Anne Arundel County Public Schools in Maryland is incorporating social and emotional learning throughout online instruction across all grade levels in the 85,000-student district, including student-driven virtual wellness blocks for high-schoolers. Pandemic worsens tech divide for rural students

Rural educators say they are concerned that the shift to remote instruction during the pandemic could worsen the divide among rural and urban students, with data showing that more than one-third of the rural US lacks access to high-speed internet. Six parents sued an Oklahoma school district Monday, saying its remote learning plan is causing them financial hardship. The district stated it is following Oklahoma State Department of Education guidelines to safely reopen to in-person learning during the coronavirus pandemic.

Video, coaching boost classroom PD

Newport News Public Schools in Virginia has been using video coaching for two years to aid in professional development, so the switch to remote schooling just allowed them expand their reach to more teachers, tech team members Billie Hart and Delrose Adkinson write. Teachers can watch videos of themselves in class to learn whether students were engaged and the insights of a coach can help instructors improve.

District investigates intrusion into online course

A ninth-grade online course at a Massachusetts high school was interrupted by someone who made offensive and racially charged comments. Officials say they are investigating the incident and are unsure whether the person who made the comments was from inside or outside the school system.

Technology helps personalize math lessons

Some schools are adopting computer algorithms and machine learning to help improve students’ outcomes in math. The nonprofit Teach to One 360 uses such technology to offer daily, personalized math instruction for students that adapts the teaching method to students’ needs, including teacher-led lessons, small-group work, interactive videos and games.
