Kentucky’s Jefferson County Public Schools in 2018 developed a contingency plan that helped the district implement remote learning during the coronavirus outbreak, writes Mike Raisor, the district’s former chief operations officer. The plan, which took a year to develop, gets the district up and running within 12 hours of a disaster or situation and keeps the district functioning for the next 30 days, Raisor explains.

The College Board has decided that students around the country taking AP tests online can submit answers via email after numerous students were unable to submit their answers during browser-based testing from May 11 to 15. Students who took the test during this time will have to take a makeup test instead of being able to email their unsubmitted answers.

Is remote learning worsening inequities?

As many as 1.3 billion students worldwide may be affected by school closures due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to Victoria Nash and Rebecca Eynon, both of the University of Oxford. In this commentary, they share that while schools adjusted quickly to remote instruction, the experiment has helped to expand inequity among students and suggest that going forward schools consider other tools — including television or apps on smartphones — to deliver content.

Flexibility with online learning extended

The Department of Education is telling colleges they can continue to offer online classes without losing accreditation, giving institutions some flexibility about reopening campuses. The guidance issued last week says when students withdraw from school during the pandemic, the colleges don’t have to return Title IV funds and that all withdrawals can be considered pandemic-related.
