There are many challenges in being a principal in a small rural school in New Zealand, but when principals work collaboratively across schools they can relieve some of those challenges and provide benefits for their students and themselves. Read more

Naumai, haere mai ki te Kura Tuatahi – Akonga Aka Mariko. Welcome to the VLN Primary School

Our goal is to:

Create Connected, Passionate, Purposeful Learners

In this newsletter we update you on research findings and recommendations on rural education, virtual learning and collaborative practice. We report on our recent AGM and newly formed Governance Group and discuss the proposed repeal of CoOLs (Communities of Online Learning) legislation. There is a lot of consultation taking place in education right now it is quite overwhelming to be able to respond to the sheer volume of it.  I am concerned that online learning doesn’t get left by the wayside within the wider process of review, small rural schools get equitable and fair opportunities, and the government understands there are many models of working online across schools and they all require adequate funding and support.

It’s not too late to get your enrolments in for Semester 2, starting at the beginning of Term 3.  We have a couple of exciting new programmes on offer and Korean classes at NO COST.  We introduce four new eteachers who strengthen our team and extend the opportunities we can share with our schools. If you have been thinking about getting involved now is a great time to jump in!

Sadly we also farewell Madlen Kunath who has been our awesome elearning support person for the first Semester. Madlen is accompanying her husband on sabbatical to Berlin for the remainder of the year.

Funding is an issue in maintaining an elearning support role, also at this stage we have no contract with the Ministry for 2018 and beyond. We have started a Give a Little Page to attract sponsorship. Please share this with your community and networks and encourage those who can to support our work.

Finally Sitech advise me they still have a special offer for schools on web conferencing camera and audio equipment at reasonable prices.

I hope you all have a restful holiday break

Kia pai tō whakatā

Ngā mihi nui

Rachel
