21st Century Learning Environments

by Timothy Gard, Chief Learning Strategist

In a foundation document for discussion produced by the Ministry of Education in Ontario, entitled Towards Defining 21st Century Competencies for Ontario (Phase 1) one of the key areas identified for some innovative thinking and action to move forward the 21st-century competencies framework are physical spaces. If you’ve tuned into this space in the past, I’ve already written several pieces about the importance of transforming physical spaces that are more conducive to the kind of teaching and learning that supports modified or renewed physical space.

We’ve referred to the learning commons model, with further areas delineated as makerspaces. As the document states, “Research supports the notion that where we learn affects the quality of how we learn.” In effect, we need to produce 21st-century learning environments to meet the needs of 21st-century learners.

ISTE 2017 Reflections

Canada definitely made its mark once again at ISTE with many familiar faces presenting and attending among over 20,000 delegates North America’s largest EdTech conference in San Antonio, Texas last week. The amazing Sylvia Duckworth known for her highly popular Sketchnotes presented at the Ignite event, along with Jen Giffen from YRDSB. George Couros was also in the building! Other notable Canadians, Patricia Gartland, Superintendent & CEO, Coquitlam S.D. in B.C. On the tech side of the equation, Logics AcademyAdvanced PresentationFreshGrade, and SMART Technologies.

Over 110 education and technology leaders attended our 8th CanAm Celebration of Excellence Leadership Summit that included the Commonwealth this year. We had some 30 Australian and UK delegates. MindShare is certainly putting the “I” for International in ISTE!

Special thanks to ISTE for their fabulous support as well as BrightBytesForward ThinkingEduRTG and EdTechTeam Canada for their generous support in helping making our CanAm our best ever! R.M.

C21 Canada Summit in Partnership with the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) – Prince Edward Island
As president and co-founder of C21 Canada, we are elated to be hosting our C21 Canada Summit in Charlottetown, PEI later this month.

Why PEI? We’ll be partnering with the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC), where our C21 Canada CEO Academy members will be presenting the latest trends in technology and learning across their respective districts in Canada. It’s especially fitting given Canada’s 150th birthday and the significance of Charlottetown in the founding of our great country.

Special thanks to CMEC and the Honourable Minister, Doug Currie, PEI for their support in hosting C21 Canada. Incidentally, CMEC will also be celebrating its 50th anniversary. Congratulations!

MindShare Musings
In late breaking news we’re honoured to welcome Prof. Sidneyeve Matrix, Associate Professor teaching design thinking, digital communication, & creative entrepreneurship, Queen’s University will be our closing keynote at the 8th Canadian EdTech Leadership Summit. It’s extremely fitting given our new theme, “Designing Next Generation Schools for Today’s Student.” Prof. Matrix offers tremendous insight in the world of social media, design thinking as we prepare our future leaders for jobs that don’t exist.
A fitting segway to the tweet I’m sharing above from the OECD who have been releasing a flurry of amazing research and reports. I’m particularly interested in sharing the image below as it provides excellent insight to the essential skills future leaders require in a digital world. Coincidentally, many of these skills are highlighted in C21 Canada’s 7 C’s! As you can see, it’s really not about technology and more about prepare students to be well rounded problem solvers. I welcome your thoughts as to how you see the world unfolding with respect to this image.
I would be remiss if I didn’t congratulate and thank Angela Gauthier, Director of Education from the Toronto Catholic School Board who retired recently for her support of C21 Canada as a member of the CEO Academy. I’m a proud alumni from TCDSB where Angela left an indelible mark as well as a balanced budget!

I’m sure she’s looking forward to a well deserved break. I anticipate we’ll see Angela back to support education organizations in some mentorship or advisory capacity.

So pleased to see the proliferation of Canadian authors in education. The latest I ran into at ISTE is Tanya Avrith formerly of Lester B. Pearson School District in Montreal. She actually took delivery of her book while at ISTE. Hence the excitement in the pic captured below! Coincidentally, Tanya’s former district is led by friend and colleague, Michael Chechile, Director General and C21 CEO Academy board member.
I would be remiss if I didn’t highlight another friend of MindShare with a new book, educator extraordinaire, Jennifer Casa-Todd, from the York Catholic District School Board. Congratulations!

Next time you have an event, or book release, please tell us about it! We love hearing from you! Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep! R.M
