Five ‘Extra’ Considerations when Purchasing Technology
by Timothy Gard, Chief Learning Strategist

Caveat Emptor. You can’t be too careful in this day and age when you purchase technology for your classroom, school or district. Some products, whether software or hardware, do not always perform as expected. And more often than not, the purveyors of technology products will always put their products in the best light. It’s always a good idea to ‘kick the tires’ before making that next technology purchase. And it’s an even better idea to get a trial run of the product before you commit any of your budget to a more significant purchase.

The Innovative Practicioner: Changing Practice for a New Year

by Timothy Gard, Chief Learning Strategist

In the book, Intentional Interruption, the authors note that new learning only happens when there’s cognitive discomfort. And cognitive discomfort occurs when we are faced with one or more ideas that challenge a belief that we readily accept as true, or at least, we hold as a cornerstone of our current professional practice. If we move from year to year without challenging our beliefs and making an effort to change our practice, then we will never face cognitive discomfort. That’s the easy road. We can continue down the path to professional oblivion making only slightly measurable changes in our teaching, and presumably, in students’ learning.

Curriculum and Assessment as Powerful Tools to Improve Learning Outcomes

It’s that time of year…the final month before summer vacation! And that means crunch time – exams, final assessments, assignments, and reflecting on the past year to ensure continuous improvement for those to come. With this comes a heavy spotlight on curriculum and assessment – two very hot topics in education today. So what is it you want to achieve around curriculum and assessment for your school system?

As always, we must begin by asking ourselves, what does success look like and how do we get there? School leaders and teachers take an active role in this reflection, by standing as the visionaries to ensure a better future for their students and school communities.

MindShare at Camp905

MindShare was honoured to once again sponsor EdCamp905 in our very own backyard of Mississauga. I really enjoy the grassroots approach to the EdCamp model and the authentic informal learning that it nutures. One of the highlights for me was connecting with the amazing Jen Giffen, educator extraordinaire with YRDSB who only began her sketchnoting journing this past year. See pic below that captures a nice summary of the day’s activities. You can connect with Jen on twitter via @virtualGiff

Deepening and Broadening Conversations on Education Through Online Mediums

Stephen Hurley has worked in the Canadian education space for over three decades. After a long and exciting career (exciting for him!) as a teacher and consultant in Ontario, Stephen continues to work to open up public spaces for vibrant conversations about transformation of education systems across Canada.
MindShare Musings

It’s never been a more exciting time to be in education. Change leadership is definitely a part of the success equation and it’s happening a rapid pace across the Canadian education landscape. On that note, kudos to our friend and colleague, Ron Canuel, CEO, who was recently lured away from the CEA by The Learning Partnership to take over the helm.

So impressed that our former C21 CEO Academy member Kathi Wallace has taken on the challenge of interim YRDSB Director of Education. She will help bring stability and focus back to organization.

Congratulations to my friend and colleague, Mamdouh Shoukri, President and Vice-Chancellor, who concludes his decade long tenure this month. I hope to connect for a podcast reflection with Dr. Shoukri later this month. Stay tuned!

Congratulations to the 2017 ORION Leadership Award Winners

Did you know? In the next 5 years 75% of people in management positions (baby boomers) will be at retirement age. That’s good news for the many educators who have been patiently waiting in the wings to climb the corporate education ladder! And provide further opportunities for new teachers too!

It was super cool to attend the recent ADOBE CREATIVE JAM AT OCADU. I was so impressed with the talent level of students demonstrating their digital skills. Below is an example of an animated giff by one of the winning teams.

TVO is on a Roll! Kudos to our friends at TVO’s Educational Children’s Programming Wins Three Daytime Emmy® Awards!

Odd Squad received awards for Outstanding Performer in a Children’s, Pre-School Children’s or Family Viewing Program (Isaac Kragten) and Outstanding Writing Special Class for Odd Squad: The Movie (Tim McKeon, Mark De Angelis and Adam Peltzman).

We enjoy hearing from you, our valued MindShare community member. Please keep the news coming!

Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep! R.M.
