The 1st Formative Design in Learning Symposium
Call for Papers
Abstracts Deadline: March 3, 2017
The symposium will be held in Jacksonville, FL on July 22-23, 2017 in conjunction with the regular AECT Summer Leadership Meetings. It will begin the morning of July 22, 2016 and end at the end of day on July 23, 2017. The goal of the symposium is to gather together participants who are interested in a shared peer review process of their submissions to the journal. While the target audience is emerging scholars and graduate students, the intent is for anyone who has a potential submission and wishes to share their research, participate in a real dialogue and deep discussions about their selected topic, and receive some valuable input to help increase their chances for it to be published in the journal. Participants are encouraged to collaborate on their proposals with scholar/mentors who are also encouraged to attend.
Similar to what has been done at previous biannual Research Symposia, we will utilize the Art of Hosting techniques for engaged conversation to encourage intense and deep discussions of each submission. Time will also be allotted for one or two social/recreation events to help encourage collaboration. Accepted proposals will be then readied for submission for formal review into Springer’s Editorial Manager, the same journal management system utilized by Springer for ETR&D and TechTrends. A small conference fee (with some included meals) is expected and will range from $100 to $150.
The Journal of Formative Design in Learning bridges the gap between theory and practice by providing reflective practitioners (designers, teachers, instructors, researchers, and others) of teaching and learning with a single source for scholarly papers that discuss new developments and the impact of new knowledge in the field of formative evaluation and assessment. The journal publishes original papers of research-based design and development with a focus on applied research, including evaluation reports, action research, case studies, and lessons learned that inform improvement in instruction, and design and development approach, among others. While the main audience is practitioners, all published articles are grounded in established research and theory. This symposium is formative in nature and is specifically designed to help less experienced authors understand the submission, review, and publication processes of this peer-reviewed academic journal.
Proposals are being solicited for submissions that cover a broad range of topics. This broad framework will shape our interactions, discussions, and the informal context of the symposium. During the symposium, participants will examine submitted proposals with the intent to ready (i.e., pre-peer review) them for formal submission to the journal.
The roundtable discussions will provide a rich and engaging opportunity for participants to have their submissions reviewed as well as learn the art of journal peer review, and become informed about current research in the selected topics. Examples and experiences from outside the traditional boundaries of instructional design and educational technology are encouraged so as will enrich the discussion.
January 2017: Call for proposals

June 1, 2016: Selected Submissions Due [2,500-4,000 words]
Should a proposal be selected and the author(s) accept it, they will be asked to commit to:
- Strictly adhere to the presentation and discussion guidelines for the symposium.
- Expand the initial proposal into a paper suitable for discussion and submitting it to the symposium chairs by June 1, 2017. Failure to provide the formal paper by June 1, 2017, may result in the acceptance of the proposal to be rescinded.
- Commit to reading the submissions from the other presenters prior to attending the symposium. Attendees with be given access to all of the presenters’ papers after June 1, 2017.
- Attend the full symposium (including all sessions and workshops) and actively participate in all collaborative and/or group activities.
- Make adjustments to the initial paper based on feedback and collaboration from symposium and ready it for formal submission for the journal by September 1, 2017. This will allow enough time for the journal editors to determine which submissions will be aggregated into one or two special issues of the journal to be published in 2018.
As an “online first” journal, all accepted articles will be published online (with specific DOI numbers) within 30-45 days of final approval. Most published articles will eventually find their way into specific issues/volumes of the journal that are selected at the discretion by the editorial board and in conjunction with trending topics and specific objectives. Regardless of their appearing in an issue/volume, all published articles will be referenced/indexed for institutional P&T purposes.
