EDTECH537 – Image Entry: Statistics for July 2016

As I mentioned in the Week 6 entry for my EDTECH537 – Blogging In The Classroom course, I wanted to post a sample of an image entry.  As I describe in the course materials, an image entry is any entry that includes an image in it.  So in theory the EDTech @ Boise State logo that you see in the top right makes this an image entry.  However, generally I try to post an example that is a bit more substantial.

During each month, the day after the month has ended I post a statistics entry for the previous month and backdate it to a minute before midnight (see Statistics for June 2016 as the most recent example).  As I have mentioned in the past, WordPress has changed the way it provides statistics – so some months when I click on the statistics I get the old page and some months I get the new system.  Normally, I would say that it is unfortunate that I can’t copy and paste from the new system, but this month is means I can simply take screen shots and highlight my statistics through entries.

Over the past month there were 3,581 hits to this blog from 1,954 different visitors, compared to 3,114 hits from 1,980 visitors in June.

The top ten entries this past month included:


Interesting to note that only four of the ten most visited entries were posted in the month of July.  Several of them are years old (including the entry on the Questions About the School of Tomorrow entry that came up a fair amount during our discussions about the Potential Hazards of Blogging).

Visitors came across my blog through a variety of ways, but the most common way was through search engines.


It is worth noting that Facebook and Twitter are the second and third highest referring sources (which speaks to the importance of posting notices of your entries on your social networks) – although combined they only account for a fifth of what search engines account for.  So it is worth looking at what people searched when they used those search engines.


While the search terms line up with what became the top entries, it is important to note that these terms represent everything that had more than a single entry.  So you see a lot of searches about holiday notices, and a bunch about the school of tomorrow (or ACE).  The holiday notices really have nothing to do with K-12 online learning, but it was the most popular entry this past month and accounted for half of the top searches (which I suspect disappointed those folks).

Anyway, in terms of where these folks came from, it is actually always a bit impressive to me the span that my blog does have.


And the top ten countries included:


Predictably, the United States and Canada are at the top.  However, I’m always surprised at how the rest of the list shakes down.

Now this kind of statistics entry is something I do every month.  I post it so my readers can get a sense of what others see in this space.  But, more importantly, it is a way for me to do a quick assessment of what is working on my blog and what impact it is having.  For example, the Questions About the School of Tomorrow entry is always near the top of the list of popular entries – almost every single month.  This means that this content is popular and maybe I should post more along that topic.  If you look through my blog history, I have posted two other entries about this program (see Guest Blogger: Examining Accelerated Christian Education and Guest Blogger: School of Tomorrow) – the first of which generated a lot of discussion, but the second has largely flown under the radar (granted there was a typo in the title, which I just fixed so it will be interesting to see if that changes things for next month).

Finally, as most folks know I originally blogged using Blogger – before switching to WordPress.  I have left the old blog site active, as the final entry drives traffic to the current blog.  Each month I still receive the statistics from that old blog site (and it still generates some traffic)…

  1. That is a really interesting graphic that you have used to show people from all over the world accessing your blog. Even if it is only 1 or 2 people in some of those countries. It would go along really well with some of the teachers that post on Facebook about doing an experiment to show their students how far social networking can reach and asking everyone to comment with their city/state/country information. That map really conveys the information visually instead of just in a list.

    • Interesting… I had never thought of it that way. The live traffic feed widget that I have on the right side of the blog provides a nice, real-time history of visits too – which I think could be useful too.
