Digital Learning Innovation
Award Update

Thank you to all who submitted applications for the Digital Learning Innovation Award (DLIAward)! The team will now review submissions and recognize winners from submissions in two categories:

  • 51 Submissions for Institutional Award – $100,000 (up to three awarded)
  • 55 Submissions for Faculty-led Team Award – $10,000 (up to 10 awarded)

Review of submissions will take place July 11-August 26th. Winners will be notified in September and announced at the OLC Accelerate conference, Nov. 16-18 in Orlando, Florida.

Online learning is no longer an anomaly in U.S. higher education, but many still question its efficacy, especially for students most at-risk for failure. This webinar will showcase the exciting results of recent research that suggests that taking online courses is not necessarily harmful to students’ chances of being retained at an institution. Designed to further explore the recent report, “Retention, Progression and the Taking of Online Courses” in the special Learning Analytics edition of Online Learning, the expert panelists will explain how a large scale analysis on the effectiveness of learning modalities compiled within the Predictive Analytics Reporting (PAR) Framework revealed that online courses can provide both flexibility and access while improving student completion. Are you interested in learning more about this topic prior to the webinar? Dr. Pilar Munday, Associate Professor of Spanish at Sacred Heart University and OLC Institute faculty for the workshop, Exploring Hashtags for Learning, shares her take on social media and innovation in online teaching in a recent blog post, Insights from the Field: Twitter, Instagram, Blogs and Cake.

Pilar states, “In this workshop, we will find and create useful hashtags for different purposes. Through collaboration with other participants, we will discover multiple ways to incorporate hashtags into learning activities.”

Special Issue: Learning Analytics

We are pleased to present this special issueof the Online Learning Journal (OLJ), edited by Dr. Karen Vignare and Dr. Patsy Moskal, devoted to learning analytics for online teaching and learning. The nine papers in this issue provide new and informative research that we hope can help readers make decisions about applying analytics within the context of their own online teaching and learning environments. Readers will find information about designing environments within online learning while also highlighting studies that expand upon what exists in currently published research. An additional four articles focus on other topics pertinent to the field of online and blended learning.

Graduate Student Discovery Session Call for Proposals

The Online Learning Journal (OLJ) in partnership with the Online Learning Consortium invites submissions for the inaugural Graduate Student Discovery Session. Hosted at OLC Accelerate 2016, this electronic poster session will be the first time in the history of the conference that there will be a session dedicated to graduate student research. OLC Accelerate 2016 will convene November 16-18, 2016 at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Florida.

We seek proposals that reflect and showcase our vibrant community of practice — promoting theory, research and methodology in online, blended, and web-enhanced teaching and learning. Note that each individual is limited to no more than one electronic poster proposal submission for the graduate student Discovery session.

Nominations Open for
OLC Awards

For fifteen years, the Online Learning Consortium has recognized outstanding work in the field of online education through an annual awards process since 2001. Seven different awards for excellence in online teaching and learning are awarded each year, as are OLC Fellows awards and Effective Practice awards. Learn more about the awards here and then submit nominations through our awards portal.

The winners will be announced at OLC Accelerate (formerly known as the Annual Online Learning Consortium International Conference) held in Orlando, November 16 – 18.
