Global Doctoral Consortium – sign up for invitations

During the first part of June, ICDE together with its founding partners will launch the Global Doctoral Consortium (GDC), a global initiative aiming to support doctoral students in the research field related to online, open, flexible and technology enhanced learning.

Call for proposals: Study on Models for online, open, flexible and technology enhanced higher education

ICDE invites proposals for a study providing an overview of delivery models for open, online, flexible and technology enhanced higher education.

The idea is to do a number of case studies of higher education providers around the globe, including emerging, new delivery models, and investigate if it is possible to “collapse” the cases into a few significant models.

The study will establish an overview of the global situation with regards to existing and emerging delivery models on online, open, flexible and technology enhanced higher education, and to produce an easy to read report describing the most relevant models, including guidelines and suggestions for using the models. Open Praxis is ICDE’s peer-reviewed open access scholarly journal focusing on research and innovation in open, distance and flexible education. The journal is currently calling for reviewers. Join ICDE for a webinar that provides practical advise and inspiration for teaching of STEM: Tuesday June 21, 15:00 (Oslo time)

The webinar will discuss a new publication “Teaching Science Online” and will focus on the teaching of science, technology, engineering and maths. While the need and demand for STEM is acute, traditional brick and mortar higher education systems are having difficulty responding to it. Online, open and flexible learning presents a viable alternative and supplement to meet demand, and the challenges related to cost, access and flexibility.

EDEN Conference 2016: 14-17 June, Budapest, Hungary

Attending the EDEN Conference? Then join ICDE for an informal networking lunch break on 15 June at 13.30.  The informal get together is open to ICDE members and those interested in getting to know more about ICDE and its initiatives. Short introductions to ICDEs’ current work and priorities, questions, answers and informal member talks are on the agenda. Senior Advisor Torunn Gjelsvik from the ICDE Secretariat will be representing the ICDE Secretariat during the EDEN Conference. Refreshments will be served.

Global Ethics Forum: 23-25 June 2016, Geneva, Switzerland

ICDE has partnered with the Global Ethics Forum (GEF) 2016 Conference. Participating in the three day programme will be ICDE Secretary General, Gard Titlestad and ICDE institutional member, UNISA, who will be represented by both Divya Singh, Vice-Principal of Advisory and Assurance Services, and Zibuyile Jafta, Deputy Director: Ethics. Over the three day conference they will be available to connect to on site for discussions and networking.  Presentations will be made available to ICDE members after the conference. IITE-2016 International Conference: ICT in Education: Innovation for Quality, Openness and Inclusion: 5-6 September 2016, St. Petersburg, Russia

UNESCO IITE organizes international conferences once every two years to provide a forum for education policy makers, practitioners and experts for discussing the cutting-edge issues in the use of ICT in education. This year, building on the Incheon Declaration, the Quindao Declaration, the Education 2030 Framework for Action and Sustainable Development Goals, IITE-2016 International Conference will further the discussion of the role of ICT in the context of post-2015 education agenda and will focus on the impact of innovative approaches in the use of ICT for the sake of provision of inclusive and quality education, widening access to and openness of formal and non-formal education. The ICDE Secretary General who is currently a board member of UNESCO IITE will be available during the conference to connect with members and those interested in accessing ICDEs global network and expertise. More information on the conference is available here…

ICDE members collaboration on publication of new book on MOOCs

The Korea National Open University (KNOU), The Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), Spain, Open University of China, Open University of Japan and University of the Philippines Open University, all members of ICDE have recently collaborated on the publication of a new book on MOOCs which title is: “MOOCS AND EDUCATIONAL CHALLENGES AROUND ASIA AND EUROPE”

The publication was coordinated by the Korea National Open University (KNOU) with participation of the four other ICDE members. More information…

Dr. Yang Zhijian, ICDE Executive Committee member elected as President of the China Association of Education Technology (CAET).

ICDE would like to congratulate Dr. Yang Zhijian, ICDE Executive Committee member on his appointment as the new President for the China Association of Education Technology (CAET). His appointment was confirmed during the 2016 Representative Assembly of China Association of Education Technology (CAET) and the 6th Election Conference for the New Board of Directors that took place in Fujian Province in China on 23 April, 2016. More information…

The new series featured on the Contact North | Contact Nord faculty portal teachonline.ca, member of ICDE jhas now published its third installment. The series is called INTERVIEWS WITH LEADING ONLINE, OPEN AND FLEXIBLE LEARNING PRACTITIONERS – and features podcasts of interviews on the latest development and thinking in online learning.

UOC experts find that open-source software projects do not operate democratically

The purpose of the open-source software movement is to advocate open (the code is public), collaborative (the community participates in the development process) software development. However, neither this goal nor the theoretically democratic functioning that one would expect is always met. This is the main conclusion reached by the SOM Research Lab at the ICDE member Universitat Oberta de Catalunya’s (UOC) Internet Interdisciplinary Institute (IN3). More information…

A UK online university network is claiming a “breakthrough moment” with a project which will allow students to cut the cost of a Russell Group degree by studying part of it online. (BBC) 

A Futurelearn online course will provide credits towards a University of Leeds undergraduate degree. It will mean reducing the time and cost of tuition fees for a full degree. Futurelearn chairman Peter Horrocks says this will provide the flexibility needed by many students.

The online learning platform, which offers courses from more than 50 universities, was set up in 2013 by the Open University, as a UK provider for so-called Moocs (massive, open, online courses). Full article.

TNE growth must go hand in hand with quality – Panel (University World News)

The growth of transnational education, or TNE, must go hand in hand with an increase in quality, according to a panel of experts taking part in a webinar on the future of cross-border higher education. With countries hosting TNE programmes tightening up on regulations, the webinar heard universities in the United States, United Kingdom and other countries providing transnational education were withdrawing from the riskier end, such as franchising and validating, and focusing instead on distance learning, branch campuses and joint or dual degrees where they have greater quality control. E-Learning, E-Commerce and E-Health: How Internet Connectivity Is Transforming Lives Across the Globe

The rise of internet connectivity is transforming lives across the globe, with sweeping benefits for growth, jobs, and prosperity more widespread by the day. Over three billion people are now connected to the internet, with numbers predicted to rise to over six billion by 2020, according to a recent State of Broadband report. Full article.
