‘There and back: Charting flexible pathways in open, mobile and distance education’

The biennial DEANZ conference showcases best practice and theory in the broad field of open, distance, flexible and mobile learning across all aspects of the education sector including the compulsory, tertiary, and professional development settings.

The conference theme, There and Back: Charting flexible pathways in open, mobile and distance education, draws inspiration from a Hobbiton-based theme and conference dinner venue. We have an exciting and inspirational line up of international and local experts who promise an engaging professional dialogue on using digital technologies to serve teaching and learning.

Keynote Speaker:

Dr Dianne Forbes
University of Waikato
Dianne Forbes is Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the University of Waikato. Dianne has an extensive background in education and in integrating digital technologies with teaching and learning. She is an experienced online educator in the teacher education programme and in the Faculty of Education’s Mixed Media Programme since 2002. Winner of the 2011 Inaugural Nola Campbell Memorial eLearning Excellence Award as well as 2011 Faculty of Education Tertiary Teaching Excellence Award, Dianne’s research interests and practice revolve around innovative pedagogies and e-learning including student-generated podcasting, negotiating learning design and learning, and educational uses of social media with an emphasis on cultivating professional online presence and learning networks.

Mixed media pathways: Bringing teacher education to your home town
In this keynote, Dianne will highlight the aspiration and uniqueness of the University of Waikato’s Mixed Media Presentation (MMP) in enabling aspiring teachers to study online with support from base schools to realise their teaching dreams and its impact on teacher educators, and teacher education research and practice. She will showcase the current MMP pathway with exemplars of practice and include a forecast of journeys to come.

Carolyn Alexander Bennett 
FarNet
Carolyn is the E-Principal of FarNet in Tai Tokerau. She is one of the founding members of the Virtual Learning Network Community(VLNZ) Charitable Trust and is the Chairperson of the VLNC Council. FarNet is well known as a successful online Community of Schools providing online learning opportunities through the use of video conferencing and other online tools as part of the VLNC. Carolyn leads the online community and teaches online in her specialist subject of accounting. She and has been responsible for providing digital learning opportunities for the schools within Tai Tokerau through the successful Digital Horizon Conferences held in the region.

FarNet Ten Years On: The Past, Present and Future for distance learners through the NZ Virtual Learning Network Community (NZVLNC)
In this keynote, Carolyn discusses the evolvement and role of FarNet and the collaborative community that has been formed around it through using digital technologies to reach schools and kura. This presentation traces the FarNet journey through the ever changing educational and technology landscapes to meet the learning needs of rural school students and communities through distance education.Join us for an engaging professional dialogue on using digital technologies to serve teaching and learning.
