SITE 2016 – Preparing Teachers for Quality Online Teaching

As I mentioned in the entry entitled SITE 2016 And K-12 Online Learning, the the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education (SITE) 2016 annual conference is occurring in Savannah, Georgia this week, and SITE is home to the K-12 Online Learning SIG.  That means that I will be blogging many of the sessions throughout the week.  The sixth session I am blogging is:

Preparing Teachers for Quality Online Teaching

As schools and districts transition to offering online courses for K-12 learners, teacher educators must work to prepare teaching candidates for transitioning to a new teaching and learning environment. In this session, the presenter will model research-based practices for designing and implementing online learning experiences to prepare teaching candidates for online environments. The session will be presented in a blended format, providing participants with the opportunity to experience quality online learning themselves. Participants will actively participate in online learning experiences that model the research-based practices shared by the presenter and will have opportunities to reflect on how these practices can be applied to their own work. This is a blended session, with some learning taking place through modeling and discussion and some learning taking place online (individually & collaboratively) via 3D GameLab.

I was in another room for the first 20 minutes of this roundtable, as I was attending another brief paper session.

However, the presenter (or both presenters) before Jamie went well over time and then hung out in the room – preventing Jamie from beginning in a VERY RUDE fashion.  In case you are wondering, the sessions before Jamie’s were:

Anyway, this was a more general session that focused on what were some of the features of quality online teaching – where Jamie basically took us through screenshots of different things that she has done, based on what the literature has told us is effective online teaching (e.g., clear communication, frequent opportunities with instructor, present content in a variety of ways, etc.).

Jamie then transitioned to what the research says we need to do with pre-service teachers to provide them with some of the skills the literature says is effective online teaching.  Jamie outlined four of these:

  1. need experience as online learners
  2. address attitudes and misconceptions about online teaching and learning
  3. culture of support
  4. focus on and integrate content, pedagogy, and technology

And that was about it, because Jamie lost about half of her time to the above noted folks.

  1. Thanks for naming names Michael. Maybe those folks track their names and will get that feedback. One of the reasons I no longer go to SITE, lack of session management.
