Mobile Learning On The Interwebs

Should parents be asked to buy iPads for students?
A primary school in China is seeking to help students improve their digital skills by asking parents to buy their children an iPad. So far, 96 parents at the school with 1,117 students have agreed to buy the tablets, with others questioning whether the technology is necessary for students so young. “Some families cannot afford computers and they don’t have access to the Internet, let alone buying a tablet,” said Xiong Bingqi, vice president of the 21st Century Education Research Institute. China Daily (Beijing) (7/13)

Why personalized learning requires more than an iPad
School-based technology specialist Patrick Ledesma recently participated in a summer seminar hosted by the U.S. Department of Education in which he discussed personalized learning with other educators. For such learning to be successful, he writes about the need for effective teaching to accompany educational technology. However, before using the technology, teachers must know their students, know their area of study, effectively manage student learning and be able to access necessary resources, he writes. Touch-screen tabletop allows students to collaborate
The recent International Conference of the Learning Sciences at the University of Sydney, Australia, featured new technologies that some say could revolutionize teaching and learning in the next five years. Among the digital tools is a touch-screen tabletop that allows students to collaborate more than they would be able to using an interactive whiteboard. Teachers also can discern what work individual students did for group projects. The Age (Melbourne, Australia) (7/16)

App matches books to students’ reading levels
Book Retriever, a mobile application recently released by Classroom Library Co., continues to be an iTunes top seller even during summer break. The app allows parents and teachers to match a child’s reading level to items found in a database of more than 130,000 books. The app also includes a cataloging tool and a list of 10 “hot” books that changes monthly. Publishers Weekly (7/12)
