From Monday’s inbox…

The Joy of Learning

Conference Webinars

If you are not joining the event, you can particpate at the following webinar workshops by entering their dedicated webinar rooms listed below. Workshop teams will have a designated facilitator who will enable the online participants to contribute to the live discussions.

Transitions into Higher Education: Can the Use of Digital Media, Serious Games and Virtual Worlds Support Learning to Learn Competencies?

15 June 2013, 09:15 – 10.45 CET

The project partnership will bring together, for the third time, people attending the EDEN 2013 Annual Conference in Oslo and a group of online participants to involve them in a lively guided discussion. To warm up and break the ice, the project approach and its results will be presented, including national pilot implementations with direct contributions of teachers. After the implementation presentations smaller working groups of the participants will select 2 or 3 tool (from videos, Scoop.it, Google Drive, Del.icio.us and blogs) that they will collectively discuss and analyse. The preparatory work for this has already begun, if you wish to contribute to the list of advantages, disadvantages and ways of ICT usage (that we will discuss in Oslo), please fill in this form.

In the second part of the workshop a blank SWOT matrix will be presented in both the conference room and on the online platform of the webinar and with the use of “coloured post-its” the participants can map the particular strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the 5 investigated tools. The discussion will continue after the workshop in the eLene2learn Facebook group. The Adobe Connect room where the webinar will be held is at:

How to Power-up Communities behind OER Initiatives

15 June 2013, 11:15 – 12:30 CET

This workshop of POERUP project will begin with the development of a shared consensus on the concept of OER and OER Communities. The facilitators will provide a short overview of examples of existing OER Communities. Participants may visualise their own learning ties and reflect on the influence these learning ties have for their own use.

If you would like to attend this webinar and/or use the network awareness tool to visualise your own individual network of peers, please, fill in this form, so that the organisers can create your personal account and send you the URL of the online meeting room before the event.

See you in Oslo!

[EDEN-News] EDEN Project News: 3rd eLene2learn Newsletter

From Wednesday’s inbox…

elene2learn

EDEN Project News

I Like to Learn… I Learn to Learn… eLene2learn

3rd Newsletter – Growing and Spreading

During the first half of its lifetime, the eLene2learn project has successfully built an active social/professional network of teachers, pupils, students, researchers and decision makers representing countries from across the EU. This multi-stakeholder community has been exchanging and discussing their experiences and experimental or already successfully implemented practices since the early stages of the project, exploring and promoting the contribution of ICT and digital media in supporting the development of learning to learn competencies in lifelong learning transitions (moving from secondary school to university, entering employment, moving back into training or education to re-skill or upgrade competencies).

‘How to’ guides

Through 32 national Focus Group activities organised in 8 countries and two international hybrid workshops (combined with online webinars) held in Porto in June 2012 and Leuven in October 2012, the partnership managed to collect many interesting practices, tools and methodologies in the application of ICT to develop learning to learn competencies. A total of 43 cases from different countries were described in detail and entered into the so-called “How to” guide for teachers in Secondary and Higher Education. From these cases they can learn how to integrate various ICT tools into their teaching with very concrete examples of activities for their pupils/students, which will support learning to learn competencies.

The “How to” guide is available both as pdf document (to download) and in online version on the eLene2learn portal. A navigation menu allows the users to browse the cases per competencies and tag clouds make it easy to see what kind of resources users can find there. The project hopes to collect more interesting cases during the next couple of months, so the current database is only a starting point: please let us know if you would like your case to be added to the collection.

Welcome to the world of different educational tools

In the frames of a well structured and coordinated collaboration the eLene2learn partners are doing their best to increase the diversity and strengthen the value and applicability of their implementation cases to the other countries involved. To highlight one specific example, this year our Greek partner, Ellinogermaniki Agogi (EA) decided to forget for a while the traditional and conventional way of teaching and learning and use different educational tools such as social media or digital ones. Let us ask you the questions they asked themselves before having come to this decision.

  • Have you ever thought of helping younger students reach the point of being a post proficiency student?
  • Have you ever thought of creating a blog where many useful pieces of advice regarding learning could be uploaded?
  • Can you imagine yourself being able to create confidence and independence to younger students?
  • Would you be able and willing to create a blog area to host videos, activities, links, solutions to problems arising during the learning process?
  • Can you see yourself being able to create a sense of peer support?
  • Can videos, games and activities become part and parcel of our learning process?

EA came up with nice ideas and decided to create a blog and a group in Scoop.com, which tools/solutions address both students and their teachers. They are still working on new ideas and have a long way to go but teachers and students alike feel that ICT tools are there to stay as integral part of learning and teaching.

Don’t miss our third workshop in June 2013!

By now already 2 successful eLene2learn hybrid workshops have been organised (the first one in the frame of the EDEN 2012 Annual Conference, the second in Leuven at the 7th EDEN Research Workshop), so we have sufficient experience and a returning participant base to deliver another interactive workshop not only useful and inspirational for our stakeholders but also engaging and fun.

On the 15th of June at 9:15AM CET (in Session G4) we will bring together, once again, some of the conference delegates attending the EDEN 2013 Annual Conference in Oslo and a group of online participants and involve them in a lively guided discussion. To warm up and break the ice, the project approach and its results will be presented, including national pilot implementations with direct contributions of teachers. After the implementation presentations smaller working groups of the participants will select 2 or 3 tool (from videos, Scoop.it, Google Docs, Del.icio.us and blogs) that they will collectively discuss and analyse.

The discussion will remain open online after the workshop.

Would you wish to participate the webinar, please join our Facebook group and add the event to your calendar. News about the workshop and its activities will also be posted on the project website. The Adobe Connect room where the webinar will be held is at:

eLene2learn Transnational Workshop

Before the end of 2013 there will be another, unique opportunity to catch up with us, this time in Budapest at a special Transnational Workshop, organised by EDEN on 19-21 October 2013 (if you cannot attend in person you can still join us online). This special event, with a particular focus on the implications for secondary education, will bring together participants from several Member States to exchange ideas and experience relating to the approaches they are implementing or planning to implement, based on experiences in 3 selected ICT areas: (A) social networks, (B) digital media, serious games and virtual worlds and (C) ePortfolios and blogs. eLene2learn, as one of the event’s major hosts, is going to cover the organisational costs, so there will be no registration fee to attend this gathering, but as an effect the places will be limited, so make sure you secure your registration as soon as you can – keep an eye on the project portal and our Facebook group for further information.

Meet the person behind the username

The eLene2learn consortium has a very strong intention to remain in every user’s eyes a group of dedicated flesh and blood individuals. In every newsletter, a core partner will introduce themselves and their research interest as well as their tasks within the project. In this newsletter we would like to introduce to you Alessandra Tomasini from METID – Politecnico di Milano, Italy.

[EDEN-News] POERUP Newsletter – Issue 2

Also from Friday’s inbox…

POERUP Newsletter

May 2013

Issue 2

Dear Colleague,

Since we last contacted you the POERUP project has made considerable progress and is now gaining ever higher visibility in OER circles. Recently, at the OER13 conference subtitled “Creating a Virtuous Circle”, the project presented its completed OER country reports for the first time to a face-to-face audience. The reception was very positive as you can read in this participant’s blog post.

Country reports

One of POERUP’s main aims is to find out what is happening in terms of OER policies in countries around the world, and to disseminate this information in order to stimulate the uptake of OER policies. Accordingly, one of the main deliverables to date is a set of country reports on OER initiatives. The list below shows a highlighted selection of countries, where – apart from presenting selections of exemplary cases – the different types of in-place / emerging policies are analysed. This blog post provides a summary of some of the key findings of these reports.

11 country reports plus 15 more country mini-reports (8 European, 7 non-European) have been produced:

European Union: Belgium, France, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland and UK
Outside the EU: Australia, Canada, New Zealand and United States
Mini-studies:

The list of the countries can be found on this wiki page.

Current activity

We are glad to announce that the interim progress report of our project has been submitted to the European Commission.

Grainne Conole, in her recent blog entry written during the last POERUP project meeting in Nottingham, provided a summary of some of the key points discussed: channels of communication; the 2013 EDEN Annual Conference, Online Educa Berlin and the Media and Learning conferences as potential avenues; overview of the work done on the country reports and an impressive inventory of 300 plus international OER initiatives.

An overview was presented and discussed of the methodology to be adopted for 7 in-depth case studies of OER communities. The research questions include:

  • How are the user networks behind OER initiatives structured?
  • Do users of the same online community networks’ size and density differ, in terms of their role in the community, their educational level and their level of digital literacy?
  • What do users share around the use of digital learning materials?
  • What kind of activities do they develop within the network?
  • Are we also interested in developing an OER community typology, in terms of what kinds of communities exist around OER initiatives?

Social Network Analysis (SNA) will be used as a means of understanding the nature and dynamics of the communities. Data will be collected via an online survey and a series of interviews. We are interested in three types of stakeholders: community organisers, community members and learners.

After the project meeting the partners attended the OER13 conference, actively promoting POERUP by delivering a presentation on OER Policies in 26 countries, and giving a snapshot on POERUP’s open education policy research. The informal networking opportunities in Nottingham also gave the project partners the chance to conduct a small video interview with Sara Frank Bristow who talked about her Communicate OER initiative.

Case studies

The POERUP project is required to carry out seven case studies of OER communities. Four have been finalised, here are their brief summaries:

  • Wikiwijs (Netherlands) is an open, internet-based platform, where teachers can find, download, (further) develop and share educational resources. The whole project is based on open source software, open content and open standards. Wikiwijs is inspired by the idea of wikis: collaborative developing of content. Educational resources are developed by teachers, for teachers. Teachers can freely use anything they find in the Wikiwijs database in their classrooms. The scope of Wikiwijs is the whole Dutch educational system: from primary schools up to the universities.
  • Bookinprogress (Italy) is based on a network of 800 teachers who create common books in several subjects (Italian language, history, geography, chemistry, English, physics etc.) which are then printed in the different schools adhering to the network. The books are then distributed for a rather low price to students and can be also distributed in digital versions.
  • The Open Educational Resource University – OER U – is a virtual collaboration of 22 like-minded universities and some other institutions committed to creating flexible pathways for OER learners to gain formal academic credit. It aims to provide free learning to all students worldwide, using OER learning materials with pathways to gain credible qualifications from recognised education institutions. It aims to develop a parallel learning universe to augment and add value to traditional delivery systems in post-secondary education. Through the community service mission of participating institutions they will open pathways for OER learners to earn formal academic credit and pay reduced fees for assessment and credit.
  • Futurelearn aims to bring together a range of free, open, online courses from leading UK universities, in the same place and under the same brand. There are now 18 partners including the UK Open University, 16 other universities and the British Library. The stated aims are to bring together a range of free, open, online courses from leading UK universities, that will be clear, simple to use and accessible. The initiative draws on the UKOU’s expertise in delivering distance learning and pioneering open education resources to underpin a unified, coherent offer from all of its partners. The OER U also aims to increase accessibility to higher education (HE) for students across the UK and in the rest of the world.

International Advisory Commettee

The International Advisory Committee (IAC) for POERUP is a group of experts set up to advise the project on appropriate research directions and comment constructively on project outputs. It is set up to have a flexible set of delegates, invited for each meeting from a “long list” of candidates, but taking advantage of the availability of particular experts (e.g. keynote speakers) at specific events.

Potential members can be experts in OER technology, pedagogy or policy. Some of the experts come from educational institutions, some from ministries and the agencies that advise and support them, a few are independent consultants and others are from the commercial sector including private educational providers.

The first meeting took place within the OER13 conference in Nottingham on the afternoon of the second day, where a lively discussion took place on OER policy – and in particular on the centrality or otherwise of the Paris OER Declaration produced in summer 2012. The discussion ended with a debate on the relationship of open educational resources to “open education” more generally.

Future IAC meetings will take place as follows:

  • IAC meeting 2: at the EDEN 2013 Annual Conference in Oslo on the 12th of June
  • IAC meeting 3: this will be a special workshop just before Online Educa 2013, Berlin in December

The project is also discussing whether it should run some more specific (e.g. sector-specific) IAC sessions at one or two other conferences or events, including at OER14.
