Dear Digital Learning Day Participant:Hot off the presses! We are pleased to share the following materials that can be used to “make the case” for the effective use of technology in your school and/or district. The graphic is “clickable” to more in-depth information that we encourage you to use however you see fit. Specifically, we want to offer a quick idea to incorporate this material into a student project as you plan for Digital Learning Day…
Promoting Digital Learning Through A Program Modeled After Donald Trump’s “The Apprentice” Television Show
Meet Jackie Torrelli, a fifth grade teacher, from Folger McKinsey Elementary School in Severna Park, Maryland. She has developed a cross-cutting project to help her students learn persuasive writing, math, science, and social studies while advocating for the use of digital learning in her school. She is hosting “Folger McKinsey’s Apprentice Challenge” – a program that offers team building, communication and collaboration, business and critical thinking as well as addresses core language, math and science standards.
She has divided her class into three groups who meet regularly during class time to create comprehensive strategies that promote the benefits of investing in digital learning. The students are developing their campaigns over the next 12 weeks. Ms. Torelli is bringing in expert speakers, guiding students to do research, reaching out to members of the press, and engaging community leaders in this effort. Each of the student teams will present their campaign to the principal who will act as “Donald Trump” in the Apprentice to pick a winning team. The winning team will present their findings to the PTO this February – The ultimate celebration of Digital Learning Day will be for the students to convince their local PTO to allocate precious resources to technology!
Below are a few documents to get you started with a similar program in your classroom or school that advocates for digital learning if you would like to include this as part of your Digital Learning Day activities.
