Will schools opt for new, smaller iPads?
Apple is expected to unveil a smaller, less-expensive version of its iPad on Tuesday, which could be a boon to cash-strapped school districts. Districts already trending toward tablet computers over more expensive laptops have been told the smaller version of the iPad will cost $249, rather than $499 to $829 for current models. Also, at its unveiling event Tuesday, the company is expected to highlight the device’s educational benefits. Bloomberg Businessweek (10/22)
Apple touts educational uses for new iPad Mini
Apple on Tuesday unveiled its new iPad Mini, in part, by pointing out its benefits for classroom instruction. The devices cost $329 for a Wi-Fi-enabled tablet — less than earlier versions of the iPad, which have been popular among schools and are considered the “gold standard” among some educators. On Twitter, however, reaction to the iPad Mini was mixed, with one user posting that the smaller devices do not meet requirements for assessments under the Common Core State Standards. What challenges do schools face in adopting iPads?
In this blog post, education consultant Ben Johnson details the rationale behind his school district’s decision to adopt iPads. He also lists the challenges associated with the transition, such as the cost if the devices were lost or damaged. The district decided to have students sign an iPad agreement and offer insurance policies on the devices for $45. While students were expected to return their iPads at the end of each year, students were told that when they graduated, so would their iPads. Edutopia.org/Ben Johnson’s blog (10/22)
BYOD is part of cost-effective plan to introduce digital books
An Ohio school district is considering adopting a bring-your-own device policy to cost-effectively introduce more technology, including digital books, in the classroom. However, officials say the transition will come after they have ensured the schools have the infrastructure in place to support students’ use of their own technology. Among the concerns is that the schools’ filters handle Web access, rather than students’ 4G networks. Middletown Journal (Ohio) (10/20)
