Middle school uses iPads to offer differentiated instruction
Sixth-graders at Hazelbrook Middle School in Tualatin, Ore., will use iPads this year in language arts lessons as part of an effort to close the racial achievement gap, while also tailoring lessons to student needs. Teachers say they plan to use the iBooks Author application to have students create stories. The iPads will be synced together and linked with sixth-grade learning specialist Rory Moore’s laptop, so he can offer immediate and custom feedback to each child. The Oregonian (Portland) (9/4)

Schooling universities on the use of mobile technology
Universities have a lot to learn about deploying mobile technology on campus, sasy Mehdi Maghsoodnia, CEO of the education-technology company Rafter. Although students enjoy opportunities for adaptive learning, in-classroom engagement and other tech-based services and resources, access to educational materials and institutional management of content are lacking, Maghsoodnia writes. Maghsoodnia suggests questions for universities to consider when developing a mobile platform and offers examples of schools with successful online and mobile infrastructure. GigaOm (9/19)

Can a low-cost tablet improve education in India?
A new low-cost tablet computer has been released, and supporters are once again seeking to use such a device to improve education in India, where previous attempts to integrate tablets have been unsuccessful. The latest device — the Aakash UbiSlate 7Ci — costs $35, and the rollout in India is aimed at connecting students in remote parts of the country to the Internet. TechCrunch (9/20)

Toddler apps could provide cognitive-development insight
With the rise of children using tablets and applications for education comes some questions over their use. Lisa Guernsey, author of “Screen Time,” argues that there’s often a false dichotomy drawn between passive viewing and interaction. But 77% of parents maintain that tablets are beneficial to children and help their creativity, according to a Schools.com infographic. And the use of apps by the very young could open up new vistas of knowledge into “how very young minds are understanding what they’re touching on a screen and how it relates to real life,” says Guernsey. 1 in 5 iPads break during school’s pilot program
A Wisconsin school that recently tested the use of iPads in the classroom found that about 1 in 5 devices broke and there were problems associated with the technology. However, as the program prepares to expand to other district schools, teachers are reporting the benefits of the devices, such as improved communication. “But the iPad is a tool, not a teaching strategy,” said science teacher Tera Fieri. “The use of technology has to work as part of the teaching strategy.” The Wausau Daily Herald (Wis.) (9/26)

Transition to digital textbooks raises questions over access
As Florida prepares to transition to using more digital resources in schools, a history teacher in one district has cited concerns about access and other problems associated with the change. The state is mandating districts spend half of their instructional-materials funding on digital resources by 2015. However, some parents have reported problems with logging onto the online textbooks and others have raised questions over how students with limited access to technology would be able to use the digital resources. Tablets from Amazon, Samsung viable in education marketplace
The iPad could have some competition in schools from new tablets released by Amazon and Samsung. Both Amazon’s 7-inch Kindle Fire 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet were praised by Consumer Reports, and with their new features and cost — the Kindle is selling for $159 — they are expected to make a dent in the education marketplace.
