Kan. teachers prepare to implement iPads
Teachers in Abilene, Kan., have been spending the summer learning how to incorporate iPads into their classroom instruction following the district’s decision to purchase an iPad for every student in second through 12th grades. The teachers are learning how to use iPad applications to individualize instruction and how to engage students through subject-specific lesson plans. For example, a social studies student might demonstrate an understanding of a subject by downloading and labeling photos, while literature students can read ebooks with word definitions available at their fingertips. Tips to remember when launching iPad initiatives
In this article, K-12 teachers and administrators identify five things schools should not do when they are launching iPad initiatives. For example, they suggest educators not begin such programs without first organizing classroom materials or expect students not to be distracted by games and other applications. They also recommend teachers not forget to budget money to purchase apps or assume it will be easy to share information on the devices. T.H.E. Journal (7/25)
Text-to-speech app now features children’s voices
A new version of the popular text-to-speech application — Proloquo2Go — is being released for the first time featuring two children’s voices rather than modified adult voices. The technology often is used by children with disorders, such as autism and cerebral palsy, and the new app — Proloquo2Go 2.1 — is the result of ongoing efforts by technology companies to create computerized voices that sound more human. The update is free to users who already own the app. The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (7/25), GigaOm (7/25)

IPads replace high school’s algebra textbooks
A New Hampshire school district intends to replace textbooks in six sections of Algebra I with iPads. The decision stems from changes to the course curriculum. Rather than being asked to show their work, students will be expected to discuss and defend their answers and present the logic behind their work. Teachers said they did not have a textbook that fit the new standards and decided to use iPads to access digital materials. Concord Monitor (N.H.) (7/24)

How can teachers use iPads effectively?
School districts are deploying iPads to classrooms at a record-setting pace, according to the writers of this opinion article, who warn that the technology can play a role in improving student achievement only if the devices are used in new ways, rather than as “supplemental tools.” Cathleen Norris, of the University of North Texas, and Elliot Soloway, of the University of Michigan, suggest that iPads be equipped with necessary applications and resources and that teachers be trained to use them. District Administration magazine (7/2012)
iTunes U allows teachers to upload content
Apple released an update Wednesday to its iTunes U application that will allow K-12 teachers to create private courses for their students. The program allows teachers to create 12 courses — bypassing the previous verification process required by iTunes U. The program is intended to be used by educators who work with iPads in the classroom. All Things D (7/25)

Why the iPad is succeeding in schools
Apple CEO Tim Cook said this week that the company’s iPad tablet computer is setting records in the adoption of education technology. “The adoption of the iPad in education is something I’ve never seen in any technology,” Cook said. “Education tends to be a conservative institution, but we’re not seeing that at all on the iPad.” GigaOm (7/25)
School works to make iPads affordable for students
A middle school in Washington state will require all students to use iPads beginning in the next academic year. While students can provide their own devices, officials say they do not want students to be excluded if they cannot afford the technology. Instead, students can check out iPads provided by the school, if their families are approved. A plan also is available in which families can make monthly payments. HeraldNet (Everett, Wash.) (7/25)
