Mobile Learning On The Interwebs

Beginning with the ASCD Smartbrief.

In-app purchasing entices kids to become consumers
In-application purchasing mechanisms within games and other programs that target children are successfully persuading parents to turn virtual cash cows into actual ones for developers. A Kidsay survey indicates 60% of children 8 to 11 years old have used phone apps, with Interpret adding that a million children younger than 12 have made an in-app purchase in the past six months. The Wall Street Journal (6/8)

Using mobile technology to keep students learning all summer long
Mary Beth Hertz, an elementary computer teacher in an urban Philadelphia school, in this blog post offers suggestions for maintaining student engagement throughout the summer months. Not every student has a computer, Hertz writes, but every student has a cell phone and teachers can use mobile applications to connect with students on Edmodo, Instagram, Facebook fan pages, Words With Friends and more. Edutopia.org/Mary Beth Hertz’s blog (6/14)

Also the ASCD Worldwide Edition Smartbrief.

New Zealand school uses iPads, iPods to engage students
All Year 7 and Year 8 students at a school in New Zealand are using iPods in the classroom, and the school also has a pool of iPads available to all students. Officials said students are using the application Puppet Pals to create animated movies, and Lifecards to make post cards and newspaper articles. Educators recently told parents the technology is helping to engage students in lessons, and explained that they are working to ensure students are using the devices appropriately. Stuff (New Zealand) (12 Jun.)

And the SmartBrief for EdTech.

Mass. district evaluates success of iPad program
Elementary-school students in a Massachusetts district have used iPads in the classroom since October, and educators say that — so far — the program appears successful. However, without solid data to support it, educators will continue to evaluate the program. Originally, the district had hoped to provide one device for each student in the program, but without sufficient funds, the district had about two students for each iPad. Sentinel & Enterprise (Fitchburg, Mass.) (6/10)

District weighs cost of digital, traditional textbooks
A one-to-one computing program under consideration in a Missouri school district could initially cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Under the proposal, students would have access to netbook computers, which they would use to access digital textbooks and other resources. When considering whether to adopt the program, officials said they are weighing the cost of technology with providing traditional textbooks, which cost the district $211,000 last year. Southeast Missourian (Cape Girardeau) (6/10)
