Calif. schools incorporate iPads in the classroom
Students in many Southern California districts are using iPads. They make videos in place of written essays, and younger students use the tablet computers to learn their letters. Administrators have few reservations about the devices’ $600 price tag. “There is not a ton of debate about whether this is a direction the schools are heading,” said Annette Alpern, assistant superintendent at Redondo Beach Unified School District. Nev. charter thrives as state’s first “iSchool”
A charter school in Clark County, Nev., has become the state’s first iSchool, in which all students and staff use iPad tablet computers to learn across the curriculum. The school uses the devices to complement project-based and blended-learning methods, and educators say the devices help students — who are grouped by ability rather than age — learn at their own pace. N.H. school uses iPads to engage students in technology, learning
New Hampshire teacher Kristen Truax uses the eClicker iPad mobile application to get a quick idea of how well her second-grade students are comprehending a new math concept. The school this year purchased 50 new iPad tablet computers, using Title I funding, to integrate more technology into lessons and engage students in the use of technology on a deeper level. “In the beginning, they thought they were just going to be playing games, but they’re really enjoying going into the programs and learning to use them,” Truax said. “They’re very engaged, wholeheartedly, and very excited. Foster’s Daily Democrat (Dover, N.H.) (2/20)

Boston-area Catholic schools plan iPad programs
Several Catholic schools in the Boston area are gearing up for new schoolwide iPad tablet computer programs or initiatives to test the devices as tools for learning. At least one school will rent the devices, while others will pass on the cost to students, many of whom say they are excited about the new programs. “I think it’s a great idea,” said junior Brian Barry. “Our society is becoming more electronic. No more folders with papers flying everywhere.” The Boston Globe (tiered subscription model) (2/23)
