Registration Open for the First Symposium in the Online Education Research Series

The Sloan Consortium’s (Sloan-C) first ever, virtual-only research symposia opens for registration today! Registration is FREE and open to all. Feel free to pass this e-mail along to your colleagues. The first topic is:

Exploring Quality in Online and Blended Education

Panel convenes on January 31, 2012, 11:00—2:00 eastern time

In the online education domain, quality has always been a pressing issue, as many have challenged and continue to challenge the quality of online learning. Quality has also been central to the Sloan-C mission from its inception; it is thus fitting that the first Sloan-C symposium will explore issues of quality in online learning.

Presenters:

A. Frank Mayadas, Ph.D. At the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Dr. Mayadas is involved in a number of areas: online education, globalization of industries, industry studies, and career choice in technical fields. He started the Sloan online learning program in 1993. Read more.
Wallace E. Boston was appointed as President and Chief Executive Officer of American Public University System (APUS) and its parent company, American Public Education, Inc. in July 2004. He joined APUS in 2002 as its Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Read more.
Kay Shattuck was a member of the initial group of Maryland distance educators, who in the early 2000s, developed what would become the Quality Matters program. As director of research for Quality Matters she continues to analyze and document research related to course design issues, specifically as they inform the Quality Matters RubricTM (see www.qmprogram.org/latest-research-support-rubric-standards). Meg Benke, Sloan-C President, has been with Empire State College since 1990, currently as Vice Provost for Online and Global Programs, and connected with distance education since 1983. The Center for Distance Learning enrolls 13,000 distance learning enrollments every year. Students can do complete degrees online. Read more.

About the Virtual Symposia

The Sloan-C Online Research Education Symposia in 2012 are a series of 4 interactive presentations on research of critical importance to educators engaged in advancing online and blended education. The symposia will familiarize participants with the current research in each topic via multiple perspectives and emerging trends. Participants can pursue particular aspects of the topics via focused discussions and questions to the presenters.
