Ind. school sees a role for iPads in the elementary classroom
Students in kindergarten to fifth grade at the Burris Laboratory School in Indiana are issued their own iPad tablet computers to use in the classroom. Students use the iPads for various activities, which are documented on a classroom blog. In addition, the devices are used for no more than 40 minutes each day, and are used to enhance rather than dominate the curriculum, first-grade teacher Stefanie Onieal says. Colo. teacher and students create smartphone app for school news
Colorado teacher Adam Ronscavage and some students have created a smartphone application to help connect students to academic and other school-related information. Ronscavage tested the app on students, whose feedback helped develop the final app, which will soon be able to send “push notifications” to students about scheduling changes and other last-minute information. IPad app enhances communication for children with autism
Virginia father Joe Hill, whose son has autism, created an iPad application aimed at improving communication for children with the disorder. The Aeir Talk app, which launched Nov. 30, allows children to assemble sentences using virtual flash cards that can be customized with personal text, audio and photos uploaded by the child’s parents. “The familiarity of things around them really helps in the learning,” Hill said. How the iPad is changing education in the UK and beyond
The increasing popularity — and availability — of mobile technology and digital books has changed teaching and learning, says Louise Robinson, incoming president of the Girls’ Schools Association in the United Kingdom. She said students are more engaged in text when they read it on tablet computers, such as the iPad. The technology also allows students to learn and explore anytime and anywhere, giving them more control over their own learning, Robinson said. The Telegraph (London) (28 Dec.)
