Certificate Series: Boise State University

Today I’m continuing the series of entries describing and discussing each of the certificates in online teaching that are focused on the K-12 environment.  The third one I wanted to discuss was the Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching at Boise State University.

Like many of the certificates that are currently available, the Boise State program has a K-12 track and an adult learner track.  Both tracks require students to take three courses.  Within the K-12 track, students must complete two required courses:

EDTECH521: Online Teaching in the K-12 Environment (3 credit hours)
Examines research-supported practices in online teaching and learning in the K-12 environment. Emphasizes online teaching tools, caseload management, learner engagement, and individualized instruction. Project required.

EDTECH523: Advanced Online Teaching Methods (3 credit hours)
Emphasizes content-specific instructional strategies, methods, data analysis, and improved communication in online instruction. Experience with web-based video/audio communication tools recommended.

Students must then complete one of four different electives:

EDTECH502: The Internet for Educators (3 credit hours)
Locate, retrieve, and evaluate information found on the Internet. Design and produce instructional Web pages using a combination of software and HTML/XHTML/CSS code. Apply appropriate instructional strategies and models to the design of digital curriculum.

EDTECH512: Online Course Design (3 credit hours)
Emphasizes web-based instructional design for the development of online courses. Consideration is given to various models of online delivery, content organization and presentation, and graphic design. Course participants create a fully-developed online course.

EDTECH531: Teaching and Learning In Virtual Worlds (3 credit hours)
Explores teaching and learning in virtual worlds. Project-based design, facilitation, and evaluation of instruction, research, and other resources.

EDTECH532: Educational Games and Simulations (3 credit hours)
Explores the theory and implementation of educational games, simulations, and virtual environments for improved instructional engagement. Includes evaluation methods and socio-cultural implications.

In case you were wondering, the program for adult learners also has two required courses:

EDTECH512: Online Course Design (3 credit hours)
Emphasizes web-based instructional design for the development of online courses. Consideration is given to various models of online delivery, content organization and presentation, and graphic design. Course participants create a fully-developed online course.

EDTECH522: Online Teaching for Adult Learners (3 credit hours)
Emphasizes andragogy and best practice in online teaching, analyzing online teaching tools, planning, facilitating, and assessing collaborative and interactive e-learning experiences, and gaining practical experience teaching online.

And one course from the following four electives:

EDTECH502: The Internet for Educators (3 credit hours)
Locate, retrieve, and evaluate information found on the Internet. Design and produce instructional Web pages using a combination of software and HTML/XHTML/CSS code. Apply appropriate instructional strategies and models to the design of digital curriculum.

EDTECH513: Multimedia (3 credit hours)
Research-based principles of multimedia learning are combined with technical skills of multimedia production to produce a series of digital multimedia projects for classroom and online applications.

EDTECH523: Advanced Online Teaching Methods (3 credit hours)
Emphasizes content-specific instructional strategies, methods, data analysis, and improved communication in online instruction. Experience with web-based video/audio communication tools recommended.

EDTECH531: Teaching and Learning In Virtual Worlds (3 credit hours)
Explores teaching and learning in virtual worlds. Project-based design, facilitation, and evaluation of instruction, research, and other resources.

There is no practicum requirement for students in this certificate (like there was in the Wayne State and Arizona State certificates).  It is also shorter than these other two certificates (three courses vs. four courses and a practicum).

Addendum: It was announced today (Saturday, 13 August) that this certificate also leads to the new State of Idaho online teaching endorsement.
